Particle Theory of Matter The particle theory of matter states that all matter is made up of tiny particles, specifically atoms and molecules, and that these particles have inherent characteristics. A major part of the theory is the belief that all particles in a single pure substance are the same and are different from particles of other substances.

This experiment shows how time taken for food colouring to diffuse in cold vs. hot water differs!
The outcome is clear: The diffusion of the ink in hot water takes a lot less time!
This is because the particles of the hot water have more energy than the ones of the cold water. Molecules move faster when they are heated. The rate of diffusion will increase with the temperature going up.

There are three main factors to be considered:
1.) Size of molecules: larger molecules diffuse slower than bigger ones (also it takes more energy/ heat to move bigger molecules)
2.) Temperature: see linked experiment in my other post
3.) The distance between the molecules: it takes longer for a particle to diffuse if it is further away from the point of diffusion than it does for one that is close.
