Design week

The objective of Design week seems a bit obscure or misnamed. At present, students just use recycled materials to create various crafts. But 'Design' implies thoughtfulness behind the things they are making. Sometimes it feels like random craft days!

I've observed from other schools and my own when I was schooling that design challenges don't have to be limited to a standard craft across the level and we just select the best. It could be an art challenge for Term 1, a music challenge in Term 2, a board-game making challenge for term 3 etc. Just for consideration

Digital Art Courses

P3 = Digital Illustration
The digital art courses for each level has provided a meaningful integration of ICT into art lessons. Despite the logistical challenges with some vendors, overall it feels like a valuable experience to retain which is only manageable with two people in the classroom.

P4 Photography (Art)

Lack of introduction to the ipad camera functions (aspect ratio, timer, turning the grid on/off, different modes). Which results in a lot of "Teacher how can I get this back to default" questions. Focusing on framing and design elements after the basics are down could minimise these issues

RMPS Got Talent

Would be nice if the whole school got to appreciate all RMPS got talent performances instead of lower primary only seeing lower primary and upper primary only seeing upper primary.

RMPS Got talent seems to be end up as performance items that we tie into other events, which ends up extra work because of the coordination with other committees. If given its own spotlight and time, we can showcase the student's talents more prominently.

National Day Art Competition (Curricular)

It feels like sometimes we incorporate the NDP theme into whatever the students are doing just to make it work for the competition, when the students could be using the time to explore subject matters that are not limited to Singapore.

I think its good to incorporate local themes and artists, but not just be because we want pieces for a competition where we don't use the designs for anything after.

The students spend many curriculum weeks working on NDAC pieces only to have just 3 top 3 in the class featured and 3 in a cohort awarded. Seems like a lot of effort for little payoff.

A National Day Art Challenge instead might be fun though!

RMPS Arts Festival

It's in the name, as the Aesthetics department we should be helming the Arts Fest! So far the focus on the Arts and different artforms for a pockets of time for a few days each year is nice, but it is a little restrictive that we can only have mostly morning assembly and recess to do these activities. It feels like Arts recess activities instead of a full blown festival.

Festival implies it should be a full day dedicated to the Arts! (Similar to Olympic Fest) This will cut down on a lot coordination for the spread out pockets of time over 3 days, imo.

Consider merging with Fun with learning day? (This year's had many art based learning activities)

P2 Drama LJ

With COVID restrictions lifted, it feels more practical to have performances and workshops come to us instead of us going to them.

The P2s have a decent number of Learning Journeys as is, and have many more opportunities to learn outside of school later on as well. It does not feel necessary for us to get them out of school for a drama experience.

CCA Going out for Esplanade performance

CCAs being the targeted group the outside performance experiences makes sense because they can apply it in their existing area of interest. It is also not as difficult to coordinate because we already have shared CCA timing after school to go for them

Mooncake Festival Lantern Making Competition Announcement?

This event is not under us, so I'm not sure why we are asked to make the announcement for it each year when the students hand in the lanterns to the MT department 😅 Maybe RMPS Connect would be a better platform?

RMPS National Day Art Competition

Additional platform to showcase their drawing talents in school but it is restrictive to only certain skills - drawing and "aesthetic" (how nice it look) aspect to it. Winners are views/ preference of only 1 judge (per level). No student voice is considered.

Artwork was created not on national day but specifically for national day. Unsure if objective is really met if competition is compulsory and see like a "must" do.

Previously (2017-2019 and even before), each class would choose their fav piece and will be personalized for each class. and every class take a class photo and it was a massive display at Foyer/Gallery with all classes photos printed out on A3 laminated and showcased. The students look forward and they have a collective memories of their peer shortlisted work. When i joined the school, think was the 9th or 10th NDAC >.< hahaha
