Junkyards and metal shops were rezoned to Barrio Logan which residents felt "were incompatible with a residential community," (CPST 2017) accurately depicted by the words on the mural which directly translate to "Community yes, Junkyards no!"

The renovation and rent increase of this building has since displaced previous tenants who could no longer afford to live there, which is consistent with the effects of gentrification.

Residents of Barrio Logan tend to live in average one story homes all nestled together on a block of homes with whom they know their neighbors well. The owners of this home are people I have known for years and they say they live comfortable knowing they are surrounded by people like them who only want to live in a peaceful sense of community. Mrs. Vasquez, one of the homeowners, says it is very disheartening to know that across the street where good friends and neighbors used to live, now stands an enormous luxury apartment building.

Barrio Logan is a neighborhood in southeast San Diego that is almost completely made op of Mexican-Americans. Logan has a rich culture that is most famously recognized through Chicano Park and the dedicated residents who spend years making sure that the culture is never forgotten. Recently, the barrio has been experiencing gentrification. New in-movers have completely flipped around the area with new apartments, markets, and restaurants. While they may have good intentions, there are still negative effects taking place. For example, many have been displaced from their homes due to construction and renovations that led to a price hike in rent, as well as family-owned businesses losing profit to new competitors. This photo gallery will individually examine the phenomenon known as gentrification in different settings throughout Barrio Logan
