The Values Of Society: Chapter 1

The values of Jonas' utopia are honesty, obedience, acceptance, and responsibility. Each citizen must show these values or the consequences are severe. For example, a pilot in training flew the wrong way. He tried to fix his mistake but still got caught. The pilot was later released, meaning he was never allowed to return to the society again. (Lowery 2). It is important that the values of honesty, obedience, acceptance, and responsibility are not only found in the book, The Giver, but in our own lives. Being responsible helps things to flow smoothly. Obedience helps keep people in line and keep them safe. Acceptance helps people feel emotional safe and shows another value, Kindness. This is not important in Jonas' utopia but it is in America. Honest is another value that can be found in real life and in the Giver. If you lie in court, you may not be released but there will be a consequence, which relates back to obedience. The values are all intertwined which is what helps make Jonas' utopia... a utopia.

Apple: Chapter 3

The apple is a symbol for the utopia as a whole. An apple rots from the inside out. It may look perfect and not at all harmful from the outside but by the time you reach the core you can realize that this perfect apple is rotten. The same can be said with Jonas' utopia. When just glancing at the rules and laws of the community, it looks like the perfect place to live. There are very few criminals and transgressions are punished. The core values reflect what many people believe to be the pillars of life. But then you dive further in. You get to the rotten core of the community. Sexism can be found with the fact that a girl assigned to be a Birthmother gets 3 births and then she goes and works as a Laborer doing physical labor all day long until she retires. Differences aren't celebrated, they are frowned upon and shouldn't be mention. Newchildren not developing correctly are released and can NEVER RETURN. The core of the utopia isn't as perfect as it is on the outside... just like an apple rotting from the inside out.

Forbidden Things: Chapter 5

Something forbidden in Jonas' utopia are the feelings that come with puberty: The feelings of love and attraction. Earlier in the novel, we learned members of the community don't fall in love. Their spouses are assigned. Based on this chapter, it is evident that even attraction/crushes are not allowed. When Jonas has his dream, it is clear that he has a "crush" on Fiona. The utopia calls this "Stirrings" and when a male or female reports this to their parents or in dream telling, they begin to take pills to stop it. These pills take away the "Stirrings" almost immediately which rips away any chance of having an attraction... ever. Love for a significant other is not just outlawed, it never happens. You are assigned a husband or wife and that is that. No love... no attraction... just assignments. This process of assignments only works because of the pills that stop the "Stirrings", the pills that stop the chance of falling in love. The pills that everyone begins to take once they start puberty.

The Receiver's House: Chapter 10

The Receiver's House is fancier than the other houses in the community. The fabrics on the chairs and sofa were more luxurious and the legs on the tables aren't straight like it is the other dwellings. They are curved and have a design at the foot. The bed also had a beautiful cloth draped over it. His dwelling is fancier than the other's because he has great honor. The Chief Elder and Jonas' parents say this and even goes as far as calling the Receiver of Memory the most important job in the community.

The process for transmitting memories starts with Jonas removing his tunic. He then has to lie face down on the bed. The Giver then places his hands on Jonas' bare back. The memory leaves the Giver and Jonas receives it. Jonas then experiences the memory and learns the new words. The first memory that Jonas receives is snow. He is racing downhill on a sled which has runners on it.

"I Thought There Was Only Now": Chapter 10

Jonas means that he doesn't know anything about the past or anybody not in the community. Jonas doesn't know about the past from the time before there was a community to his parent's childhood. He is oblivious to that and only knows his experiences and right now. Jonas also doesn't know anything of people not in his community or the ones that his group visited. The community calls the vast beyond, Elsewhere. Nobody knows about Elsewhere unless they have been there. The thing is people who go Elsewhere DO NOT COME BACK. So Jonas has no idea about Elsewhere or anything in Elsewhere like sunshine or snow. This is not a good way to live! The whole point of knowing the past is so that you don't make past mistakes. How are you supposed to do that if you don't know the past?

Jonas is surprised that the Giver has the power to turn the speaker off and has a locked door because he is the only person who can do that. There are NO locked doors in the community and the Speaker is always ALWAYS on. Based on this, I can infer that privacy is not something that this community values. Normal citizens don't have a lot of privacy because they can never lock their doors to basically escape from people. Somebody is always watching the community as well. The Speaker always knows if they broke the rules. They don't have a little bit of privacy... they have none.

The title is significant to the book because the main character (other than Jonas) is the Giver. Jonas receiving the memories or the Giver giving them is a major point of the book. It builds the plot and is how Jonas and the audience learn about the community and its secrets as well as missing pieces. So the title not only introduces the character but also the main point of the whole book.
