Planting Stories: The Life of Librarian and Storyteller Pura Belpré

Published 2019
Genre: Non-fiction picture book
By: Anika Aldamuy Denise
Illustrated by Paola Escobar

In the book 'Planting Stories,' it tells a true story of a Puerto Rican woman named Pura Belpré. Coming to the United States from a foreign land, Pura wants to be like Johnny Appleseed and plant her own seeds; except instead of apple seeds, it would be stories. Pura had a strong background in storytelling and when an opportunity at the New York Public Library opened up, she took a leap of faith. From there, she was able to help create programs that attracted the growing Spanish-speaking community in Harlem and used colorful puppets to tell her bilingual stories. Before she passed away from this world, Pura was given the Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York Public Library and the American Library Association even named an award after her called the 'Pura Belpré Award;' which honors the work of Latinx authors and illustrators.

I highly recommend this book to children in all grade levels. The book goes back and forth between Spanish and English, however, it's not meant to be tricky. Rather it's meant to be seen as an invitation across the language barrier.

I could use this book with section 5.22 in Saravallos because the author uses vivid setting description to show the readers how it impacts the main character, Pura. Students can recognize why Pura was so motivated to have her country's story become a part of the United States. To her it was like having a piece of home, away from home. It was also an inspiring moment to have your community feel like they finally have a voice in foreign land.

Published 2017
Genre: Non-Fiction picture book
By: Jason Chin

'Grand Canyon' is a non-fiction picture book that describes the various ecosystems found throughout the canyon. Jason Chin allows the audience to view the canyon through the eyes of a little girl hiking with her father. She finds fossils and remnants of the past which shows the history of the canyon and its many changing faces. From once being submerged under water to now a majestic canyon, this book contains fruitful knowledge of both past and present.

I highly recommend this book to children in 3rd to 5th grade who are interested in nature, science, and/or beautiful pictures. The phrasing is more complex and the scientific terms are trickier to sound out. However, I think students will find it fascinating that dragonflies with an 8-inch wingspan used to exist on this Earth!

I could use this book for section 2.2 because this strategy encourages the reader to take breaks in between reading. I feel like this advice is helpful because non-fiction books have a lot of information. It's important to have stopping places so that not only can the student process the information, but also take the time to see if they've understood what's being processed.

Published 2019
Genre: Graphic Novel
By: Rainbow Rowell
Illustrated by Faith Erin Hicks

'Pumpkinheads' paints a seasonal friendship between Deja and Josie. Every autumn, since high school, the pair meets up to work at the pumpkin patch. However this time around, it's different; they're both in their last year of high school and will be starting college come next fall, making it their last pumpkin patch adventure together. Deja is determined to help Josie confess his love to the Fudge shop girl named Marcy; Josie has had a crush on her for the past three years and this year would be the year he finally owned up to his truth. Even though determined to find Marcy, the two frolic throughout the patch, enjoying all the food and activities they've missed out on. All the way, unbeknownst to Josie, something new was blossoming.

I highly recommend this graphic novel to children who are starting out on early chapter books and older. The message of friendship and love is deep in this novel and I feel like they will appreciate the bond between Deja and Josie.

I could use Saravallos section 6.23, 'What's in the Character's Heart?' for this graphic novel. Throughout the novel, we can see through Deja's expression that she feels for Josie more than she leads on. Having student's analyze the meaning of facial expressions will help them differentiate between thoughts and actions.

Published 2006
By: Lois Lowry

'The Giver' by Lois Lowry depicts a Utopian society in where its citizens live a structured lifestyle; rules here are strictly followed and up-kept by the council of Elders. Everyone lives ideally in their chosen family unit; a mom and dad, one daughter and one son. However, this all changed when a boy named Jonas reached his ceremony of Twelve. He became selected to become the next Receiver of Memory; an honorable, but lonely title. He began his work with an elderly man who called himself the 'Giver.'From there, Jonas was given memories that expressed deep happiness, alongside with deep sadness; a blessing and a burden all at once. Through sharing these memories, both the Giver and Jonas realized that even though the way things were was considered ideal -- It didn't feel right going through life without the depths of emotions these memories provided.

I highly recommend this book to children who are in third grade and older. I feel like there are powerful messages about individuality, society, family, friendship, and love that will encourage critical thinking for future lesson plans and life.

I could use this book for section 5.8 in Saravallos. This section asks the readers to figure out what the problem is.
This is important because figuring out the problem can help tie together the main theme.

I could also use this book for section 5.19. Readers are encouraged to observe how tenses are used to show flashback and backstory. Throughout the book, Jonas flashes back to specific moments in his past that makes sense later in his present. Focusing on these clues will also help the readers tie together the main theme of the story.

Published 2016
By: Adam Gidwitz
Illuminated by Hatem Aly

'The Inquisitor's Tale,' is an award-winning novel about three children and a Saint dog named Gwenforte. All three children have unique characteristics that set them apart from medieval France. Jeanne, a young peasant girl, would get into fits but through them, could see the future. Jacob, a kind and empathetic Jewish boy, had healing powers. William, a monk born from North African mother and Muslim father, had superhuman strength. Through destiny-driven events, the children are brought together at a French inn. They discover that they were all headed to the same destination; Saint-Denis. The journey helps them build trust and accept each other's differences by sharing stories with one another. However, they are faced with knights who are trying to hunt them down and a King who's trying to burn every copy of the holy Jewish Talmud. Will the children be able to stop the tyrant king?

I highly recommend this book to students in fourth grade and up. The humor and gore in this book will definitely keep the reader engaged; Along with the humble theme of accepting someone else for their differences.

I could use Saravallos section 6.13, 'Yes, but Why?' for this book. This book is also unique in the way that it's told through many different perspectives. The main one being the Inquisitor who arrives at the inn earlier in the story. He is quite curious about the three children and wants to know everything that he cans. Students can asked questions like, "why is the Inquisitor so curious about the children?" Keeping their mind open to observation, they will begin to pick up clues as to 'why' throughout the story; making them much more active readers.

At first glance, people will think this is a book about a man who loves his cat. However, it is very much also about a cat who loves a man. Fukumaru, the older cat was regularly looked over for adoption; so much so he thought he was doomed to eternally live inside the pet shop. However, that all changed when Kanda, a man who recently lost his wife, adopted Fukumaru. Although Fukumaru was stand offish at first, he begins to see that Kanda really cares about him. Over time, Fukumaru began to grow warm thoughts toward Kanda and their bond grows.

I think this book is a good read for children of all ages. It's a beautifully warm-hearted manga about a lonely man who finds comfort in adopting a pet after the death of his wife. I think many children with or without pets can grow to understanding the formation of a wonderful friendship.

I could use this book for section 6.4 of Saravallos. This section encourages the readers to study how feelings change throughout the story. Students can observe Fukumaru's feelings before and after he got adopted. What are some things that changed? Were they positive or negative? By studying these changes, students will develop a better understanding of the plot and connect it to the main idea. This will enhance their reading skills in the long run.

Published 2019
By: Asia Cistro
Illustrated by Marion Lindsay

Zoey and Sassafras - her cat - are excited to spend summer vacation with their magical friends in the forest! However, Zoey notices that something isn't quite right. The usual cheerfulness was replaced by grumpiness and this was highly unusual. With the help of Pip, a talking frog, and Tiny, a unicorn, Zoey discovers that it was little creatures called 'Grumplets' that were making her magical friends feel grumpy; these little guys were eating away at their happiness! Through much experimentation, Zoey observed that grumplets like sweets and together with everyone, concocts a plan to hopefully get the grumplets to leave the forest.

I think this early chapter series book is perfect for children 2nd to 3rd grade, and maybe even first grade. There are themes about friendship, critical thinking and problem solving.

I could use this book for Saravallos section 2.12, 'Ask Questions to Engage with Text.' Since this book is about Zoey and her cat, Sassafras trying to uncover the mystery of what's causing their magical friends to be grumpy, engaging questions can be asked; such as, " What comes next? Why did the character do that?" This allows students to come up with their own predictions and assumption of the text. This strategy will help them analyze text better.

Published 2017
By: Erin Entrada Kelly

'Hello, Universe' is an award-winning book about self-development, friendship and the grand scheme of things. Virgil, a shy and thin Filipino-American boy, develops a crush on Valencia, also a shy girl; but isolates herself on purpose because she is deaf. To build the courage to confess to Valencia, Virgil seeks out Kaori, the twelve-year-old fortune teller. She says that she can help Virgil undergo a ritual that will help him, but it will need five stones. This was something Virgil was happy to oblige with... So on the very next day, as Virgil and his pet guinea pig, Gulliver is roaming through the woods trying to find the perfect stones, he bumps into Chet; the neighborhood bully. His altercation with Chet, left Virgil at the bottom of the well, unable to climb his way up. Through a series of trial and tribulations, four unlikely friendships come together to help find Virgil and save him.

I recommended this book to third graders and up. It touches on the subject of bullying, special needs, and friendships in a lighthearted way. I feel like the reader will be able to gain insight and grow emphatically with the characters in this story.

I could use Saravallos's section 6.20, 'Conflict brings Complexity,' for this book. In this section, the reader is asked to analyze the difference in the character's behavior before the conflict and after the conflict. In this scenario, how was Virgil before being trapped in the well, and then after? This strategy will help students identify the conflict and witness the development of the character after they face a problem/obstacle.
