The AEF was established in 1917 to offer relief to British and French troops. Pershing's vision was that the AEF operate independently of ally forces. Trained troops were recruited from schools in America and additional training schools were established in France in order for Pershing to realize this vision. Pershing had high expectations for his officers. One who holds such high standards for others often expects the same level of performance of themselves. 

He demonstrated confidence and steadfastness. He received opposition in some examples, but he held to what he understood to be right.
