My name, Nicholas, is derived from the Greek, Nike, and is meant to describe an individual that is in possession of a victorious spirit. My last name, Pyzdrowski, is Polish in origin. I believe that it refers to “those who are of the kin or domain of Pyzdry,” which is a town in Września County, Greater Poland Voivodeship, Poland.

My parents were both raised in Catholic families and were mutually fond of St. Nicholas, who is the patron saint of children and is known for his acts of charity and kindness. My mom was also an etymology aficionado and liked the idea of pairing the significance of the name Nicholas in the Catholic faith with its Greek origins.

I do like my name. I am proud of the etymological significance of my name and aspire to emulate the feats of those who have worn it before me. I also think it is very ironic that my namesake is the patron saint of children and I possess a desire to be a teacher.

My first name usually does not give people trouble, but my last name has been a source of difficulty for many. For the most part, a lot of people struggle with the correct pronunciation of the first three consonants of my last name and opt to treat the “z” as silent or treat the “y” as if it is a long “i” (in reality, the “z” is spoken and the short “i” sound is the way to go with the “y”). In all honesty, I do not mind when people struggle with the pronunciation of my last name. I just think of it as a teachable moment.
