Chapter 5 (85-95)

Finding and ANALYSING/INTERPRETING/EVALUATING 2 quotations (written) from the predetermined section of the novel (see slideshow)

"Maybe," he said hesitantly, "maybe there is a beast." The assembly cried out savagely and Ralph stood up in amazement. "You, Simon? You believe in this?" "I don't know," said Simon. His heartbeats were choking him. "But. . . ." The storm broke. "Sit down!" "Shut up!" "Take the conch!" "Sod you!" "Shut up!" Ralph shouted. "Hear him! He's got the conch!" "What I mean is . . . maybe it's only us." "Nuts!" That was from Piggy, shocked out of decorum. Simon went on. "We could be sort of. . . ." Simon became inarticulate in his effort to express mankind's essential illness.” (Pg. 89)

When Simon wants to express ‘mankind’s essential illness’ it is foreshadowing the murderous events to come, where their ‘true’ selves come out to play. This is hinting at how people all have the ability to become the beast, everyone has the potential to become evil. This is shown especially when Simon says "What I mean is . . . maybe it's only us." where is notion is completely shot down after but through this it reveals to the reader that maybe people are the beasts. Through Simon the author conveys the message that mankind has an illness which cannot be cured but can be subdued and repressed by a system of law and civilization which prevents our true selves from revealing themselves.

“The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away.” (Pg. 91)

By using the word understandable implies that the author does not want to imply that the civilized world has all the answers, but at least there's a system of laws and rules where there are actions and consequences. This is again hinting at the message that the author is most likely trying to convey which is that rules and law keep humans from revealing or unlocking their true forms which is violent and cruel. All animals live based on survival and once civilization is gone and people can no longer afford those luxuries or have access to those benefits they go back to their once primitive selves, which is violent and corrupt.

Finding 3+ vocabulary words they didn’t understand/found interesting and writing out definition and how it was used in the novel.

Effigy: a sculpture or model of a person. (Pg. 87)

Gesticulating: use gestures, especially dramatic ones, instead of speaking or to emphasize one's words. (pg.89)

Tempestuously: characterized by strong and turbulent or conflicting emotions. (Pg. 91)

Finding at least 2 examples prominent literary devices (theme/symbol/motif/plot/style/language techniques.narrative techniques/structure etc.) from the predetermined section of the novel. Students must reference where they found this and explain its significance.

This chapter discusses and hints at the symbol of the beast and on how people all have the potential to be the beast and how some people are the 'beast' it is just trapped by rules and civilizations. The mask that Jack wears of dirt and mud, it symbolizes the mask that all of us wear, it also symbolizes that once he puts on his mask his savage side comes out.

(p.19) This quote is for the arrival of Jack Merridew and his militant choir is described as the arrival of a beast or a creature, this foreshadows his transformation from a choir leader to a pig hunter.

The ground beneath them was a bank covered with sparse grass, torn everywhere by the upheavals of fallen trees, scattered with decaying coconuts and palm saplings. Behind this was the darkness of the forest proper and the open space of the scar. We've got to make certain [that there is no beast]. Can't you see the mountain? There's no signal showing. There may be a ship out there. Are you all off your rockers?" (6.238) Ralph is learning that just saying “I’m chief doesn’t make any difference and they have to enforce a system and law of order more.

Simon, walking in front of Ralph, felt a flicker of incredulity—a beast with claws that scratched, that sat on a mountain-top, that left no tracks and yet was not fast enough to catch Samneric. However Simon thought of the beast, there rose before his inward sight the picture of a human, at once heroic and sick. (6.140) Simon may not be a brain like Piggy, but he's a smart guy; he knows that the beast is unbelievable. But that doesn't mean he's not afraid. Like we said, he's a smart guy; he knows that this whole situation is heading downhill fast.

Finding 3+ vocabulary words they didn’t understand/found interesting and writing out definition and how it was used in the novel.

Interminable: incapable of being terminated; unending

Emphatic: strongly expressive.

Contemptuously: disrespectful

Finding at least 2 examples prominent literary devices (theme/symbol/motif/plot/style/language techniques.narrative techniques/structure etc.) from the predetermined section of the novel. Students must reference where they found this and explain its significance.

“Soon the darkness was full of claws, full of the awful unknown and menace” (p.99) This is a personification example that makes the darkness and danger even more frightful.

An example of foreshadowing is *the fire goes out. He is barely wearing his shorts, it is soaked in sweat and whatever else that’s accumulated. He keeps himself busy and distracted trying to clean the grime from under his fingernails. On the beach the sun is setting, the tide begins to rise. He tries not to think about the ship that was out there.)

I don’t even understand how it happened, why do things fall apart like they do? What the bloody hell is wrong with these people.

Why can’t they just follow the rules...Is it my fault? Am I not fit to be leader? All they do is talk about that bloody beast. And..and why is Jack endorsing this, he just makes the littluns scared and what good does that do. Promising to kill the beast… hunting something that's not even real. Sometimes I wonder if he wants to go back at all…

(shakes head in doubt)

No of course he wants to go back. Why wouldn’t he. It’s time for Jack to know his place.. He can’t keep challenging me, the boys wanted me to lead, not him. So to bad! It doesn’t matter what he wants now. It’s already been decided. I… I’ve got to put a stop to his madness before he stops me.

Yes...

Stop him.

End him.

(Ralph starts shaking his head, runs hands through his hair)

No…

What am I doing?

I can’t think like that.

No, I’m the better man… why am I even considering murder an option

Have I gone mad?

What’s wrong with me…

Father, you would be so disappointed in me, if you saw what I was thinking of doing just now.

(Shakes head in embarrassment and disappointment in himself)

If only you were here, you’d know what to do. I was afraid not because I cared for him, but because I was afraid of getting punished. The only reason why I abided by the rules was because there were consequences and you taught me to have morals and ethics, but does that apply here. Do the boys still need ethics in a place like this. Jack certainly doesn’t think so, but I disagree if we lose our ethics, our morals, our rules are we any better than the pigs on this island?

(looks longingly towards the ocean)

God, I remember when we first got here… how naive we were.

How innocent I was…

How clueless…

What’s become of us...

Hell… what’s become of me…

"A snake-thing. Ever so big. He saw it."

The beastie is a metaphor as the beast does not exist but it exists within each boy. The form of the snake also shows fear as snakes are a common fear. The beastie also represents the Demons within person and brings out their animal like nature.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Chapter 5

77-84

Again he fell into that strange mood of speculation that was so foreign to him. : the forming of a theory or conjecture without firm evidence.

Tonight, except for Samneric up by the fire: civilized and socialized persons

Ralph laid the conch on the trunk beside him Ceremonially, as a sign that the speech was over: action that is actually part of a ceremony

Anyway, you don't hunt or build or help--you're a lot of cry-babies and sissies.

This quote describes that many of the boys are not helping with the hut and Ralph is quite angry about that. Ralph is feeling quite angry that he is not supported and that the boys are not listening. he is suggesting that the boys are not mature enough to pritorize survival.

"I've got the conch. I'm not talking about the fear. I'm talking about the beast. Using the symbol of power to his advantage.

He took off his glasses and blinked at them. The sun had gone as if the light had been turned off.
