He has power over all of the other monsters. He leaves his mother because she is the one who is holding the power role because she prevents him Max from eating dinner. Since Max is irritated by this and wants to be in control that is his reasoning for leaving. Max tells his mother that he basically wants to kill her but when he returns at the end of the story she ends up leaving food for him in his room. He wishes to roam in the wild, but isnt an animal and needs to follow the norms of adolescent boys. He feels the need to wear a costume to fit into the life of the wild things. When he escapes to where all the wild things are, he is immediately ruled out as an other, but he's praised for his differences and made the king of all wild things.

When his mother didn't feed him, it was meant be a form punishment by not loving him. At the island, max didn't get any food, which would also be like not getting love.
