Carol Ann Duffy was born December 23, 1955 in Glasgow, Scotland. At the age of 6, Duffy moved from Scotland to Stafford, England. Her father ran an unsuccessful business man, Duffy grew up attending convent schools and began to publish poetry magazines at the age of 14. Later on in life, she attended Liverpool University, she then graduated with her degree in philosophy in 1977. After that she later began to publish many books regarding her poetry as a way of teaching it. Most of her career consisted of her teaching poetry to others

While being at the start of her career Duffy began to write and express her work in numerous poems/books. Once she started to realize that she wanted to end that part of her career, she began to teach in Massachusetts for others so they can begin to grow the interest of poetry.
