by Andrea Beaty
illustrated by David Roberts

This book is about Aaron, who loves to listen to stories and draw the world around him. He is excited to go to school to learn how to read and write so that he can write stories of his own. Once at school, Aaron struggles to learn how to read. He ends up sharing a story with his class from his heart instead of writing it and everyone loves it. He finds his way by illustrating his stories.
This book is beautifully illustrated, which makes sense because this story is about a boy who is an illustrator. It does such a wonderful job of sharing Aaron's struggle with learning to read. How it impacts his confidence and how he receives support from his teacher. It also shows how he finds his own way to share his stories.
I think this would be a great read aloud book for students to share that not all students find reading easy (or fun). That we all have something special about us.

by Peter H. Reynolds
This book is about a girl who is reminded of their family table and remembers when they all ate and talked together at it. Then the dad starts watching TV, the mom starts checking her phone, and the brother starts playing video games so the table disappears. The girl wants everyone to come together again, so she asks each member of the family to do something they like to help her learn about making a table. Then they build the table as together as a family and make new memories.
This story was short and quick. It seemed a little heavy handed with the critique of modern families and how they don't do anything together. But it might resonate with young children, by showing them that they can find things to do with family that they both can enjoy to spend more time together. I am not sure how I could use this in the Media Center, but it has beautiful illustrations.

She realizes she has the same eyes as her mama, her Amah, and her sister, Mei-Mei. She sees how her eyes connect her to her family. She loves her eyes even though they are different.
This book is great for teaching students how others can be different and beautiful. The illustrations are also beautiful and bright. It can also be used during lessons that focus on Asian culture.

by Peter H. Reynolds

Another Peter H. Reynolds book, but this one is so much better! It is about a little boy that loves to draw! But then, his brother teases him about his drawings and he loses his confidence in himself and his art. He is just about to give up drawing for good when his sister shows him how much she loves his artwork. She tells him that his drawing are -ish (tree-ish, flower-ish) and that is okay! He loves to draw and it makes him happy.
This is a wonderful book for helping kids see that even if they aren't the best at something, they can still have fun doing it! Art (and almost anything else) can be wonderful for everyone! Not just those that are amazing at it!
I would also include this with a lesson on how our words can really hurt others, even when we don't mean to hurt them. The brother probably didn't even realize how much of an affect his words had on his brother.

by Jessie Oliveros
illustrated by Dana Wulfekotte

Holy Moly, this is a sad book. It is about how all people carry memories as balloons. The boy doesn't have that many compared to his parents (but he has more than his baby brother). It is his grandfather that has the most balloons and the best memories. But then his grandfather starts to lose his balloons and eventually does not have any left. The boy then realizes that some of the grandfather's balloons are his now and his shares the stories with him.
I am getting tears in my eyes just writing this summary. I am not sure that I could read it to students. I do think it would be a great story for a family that has someone suffering from memory loss. I am sure that it would help a child see how they can help or share their own memories with a loved one that is having a hard time remembering.

In this story, Ana loves to read but she does not have many books in her house. Then Luis Soriano comes with his traveling library. Ana creates her own story to give to Luis Soriano and he adds it to his library.
This is such a great story about how important it is that everyone has access to books!

by Maribeth Boelts
illustrated by Noah Z. Jones

This is a story about those awesome new shoes everyone has, except Jeremy. He dreams about having them. He asks his Grandma if he can get them but she says no because she does not have enough money. Then she gets a little extra and offers to take him to look at the shoes. They end up being way too expensive. Jeremy has an idea to check the thrift stores. He finds a pair and buys them with his own money because his grandma says they are too small. Then he realizes that a friend also needs a new pair of shoes and his feet are smaller than Jeremy's. So Jeremy gives the shoes to his friend (even though he still really wants them for himself).

This story is a wonderful way to show students that not everyone is able to afford the same things. But that kindness is such a great way to show our friends we care. I liked how this story focused on Jeremy and how giving his prize shoes away was tough for him (even when he saw how happy it made his friend) but that he still did the right thing and that made him happy too.
