1. Rationale

For a child to learn how to write alphabets, he must learn how to draw shapes, it is a pre writing skill. This activity will help the child to develop his fine motor coordination.

2. Objectives

1)Child to learn about shapes

This can be quantified when child is able to imitate the teacher’s labelling or identify these shapes when asked to.

2)Child to learn how to copy shapes

3)Child to learn that our world is made up of these shapes

4)Child to learn that drawing can be used to represent ideas and express thoughts and feelings.

This can be quantified when child is able to share with his peers or teacher what is his drawing/painting about.

3. Concept.

It will be an drawing and painting activity that encourages students to learn about shapes and copying shapes. There will be crayons, paints and various shapes’ puzzles on the table. Child will be given a big piece of drawing block. The teacher will label these shapes on the table and ask the child to outline the shapes unto his drawing block and paint them. If the child’s level is higher, he can copy them straight on the drawing block without using the puzzles. The teacher can ask make it fun by asking the child to form a house or a car using these shapes.

From my perspective of this video, the poem is telling us that each child has his own unique way of expressing, learning, understanding, thinking and ideas. But often than not, the adult world has a very fixed way of thinking and seeing things, that we often correct the kids to think and express like us, and we tell them, whether consciously or subconsciously that only certain ideas or thinkings are considered “correct”. This tend to kill their ideas and imaginations and they are forced to live in our world, whether they like it or not. That is why the poem says that we tell the child to learn without hands, think without heads and listen without questions. We limit the children to our own interpretation of the world, and often it is due to realities of life. This poem reminds me that I need to let my students express themselves more. Each of their world and perspectives are so different from mine and I need to take more effort in understanding their world. Instead of trying to shut them off and change them, we let them express themselves and explore their world, I might be even surprised at how much they can teach me if I allow them to. I think the bottom line is to shape my lesson objectives in a way that it is more child-led and encourages expression of ideas and imagination. As a teacher, I need to be an encouraging voice that encourages my students to be confident of their ideas and understanding and let them have the space to express themselves and grow.

I will build a craft tinkering corner in my class. There will be open ended materials for my students to explore and use. Examples are coloured ice cream sticks, coloured straws, different textures and varieties of cloths and papers, colored pom noms, crayons, scissors and different types of glues. The students can create anything they want to, with some examples shown in the corner.I can do different themes each month for them to expound on, for example "My first house", they can use the materials provided to design their first house.
