Approximately 7 questions on the exam will be open ended analysis questions of the passages you've read. You'll want to write succinct, focused, and analytical answers without spending too much time on each question. Below is an acronym I use to structure these responses that hit all the requirements on the question rubric, maximizing your time, space, and points.

A-- Answer... in the first sentence of your response, simply answer the question. Be sure to use words from the prompt or restate part of the question to maintain your focus.

C- Cite... in the second sentence of your response, cite evidence from the text to support your answer. This can be either a direct quote from the passage or a really specifically paraphrased detail.

E- Explain... In the last sentence of your response, explain or analyze the evidence you chose. Explain its connection to the answer or interpret what the author is saying.

That's it! 3-4 sentences maximum!

NOW... Let's practice with the passage "Memories" in the released version of the test (see Module 9 Lesson 1 Assignments 1 & 2). Answer the question below, using the poem, by creating a new text box in this Padlet (click the pink + sign in the bottom right corner). In the title of your text box, be sure to put your name. Give your best shot at using ACE to answer this question:

HOW DOES THE SPEAKER CHANGE FROM THE FIRST STANZA TO THE LAST?

The speaker changes from the first and last stanzas of the poem by getting louder after she recalls sweeter times in Russia. The speaker states, "Oh, I have known a peace, once I have known The joy that could have touched a heart of stone." She has went from a place she loved and was happy to a place she is a stranger and does not like.
