She had two older sisters and two older brothers. She was the youngest out of her family. Growing up,  Clara lived on a farm and looked up to her mother. When she was young her brother David became injured by falling off the roof of a barn. He was very sick. Clara was only 11 but nursed her brother back to health. Barton always hoped to help people so she started out as a teacher and taught for 14 years. During the Civil War, Clara recognized the need to help injured soldiers. This truly extraordinary nurse helped soldiers working in hospitals and delivering supplies. She became an independent nurse on the battlefield and soon she earned the title of "Angel of the Battlefield". After the war, many soldiers were missing and Clara was the one who found out what happened to over 22,000 lost soldiers. Sadly, most of the soldiers had died. This amazing nurse took the hurt soldiers into her home and wrote letters asking people to help supply food, water, supplies, clothes, and money to aid these people. Clara Barton is known for starting the American Red Cross in 1881. She helped a lot of people over the 23 years she served. This remarkable caretaker was the President of the Red Cross and dedicated her life to helping others. She noticed that there was a hole in her sleeve from a silver bullet. The bullet missed her and hit the soldier.  
*Clara Barton never had children. She dedicated her life to taking care of soldiers. 
*Today the Red Cross helps people all around the world affected by earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, and floods.                                               *Sadly on April 12, 1912 Clara Barton died when she was 91 years old.
