In modern retellings of fairy tales, it only seems natural that the princess and prince get married and live “happily ever after” despite wild past occurrences and their true identities. Even if this certain ending is clearly preposterous, writers manage to round out and puzzle it altogether… or think they do so.

In “Beauty and the Beast”, when readers arrive at the ending, many believe they have witnessed a grand and perfectly magical love between a gorgeous princess and a beast who transformed into a prince. The fact that Beast held Beauty captive and manipulated her into thinking she loved him seems to be put aside and insignificant when it is the truth that cannot be neglected. Likewise, the princess in “The Frog King” was “afraid of the cold frog” and even called him “nasty” until he became a prince with “beautiful smiling eyes” and took her to his kingdom the next day (Grimm 112). The question is the same: Where is the supposedly “true love”? In fairy tales, the sense of urgency for marriage is greater than love. It includes the idea, especially pushed by the princesses’ fathers, that princesses absolutely need a prince in their life to achieve eternal contentment.

Through an in-depth analysis of various “Beauty and the Beast” fairy tale retellings, I will argue that intimacy between the princess and the prince is commonly superficial with physical attraction and without much say from the princess’ honest desires, romance appears forced concluding with marriage.

In continuous doubt even if she knew Beast was gentle.
