This class is a great opportunity for me to become familiar with the mode continuum. I already love using gradual release as a part of the teaching learning cycle, but this class helped reawaken me to some of the possibilities here too. I am walking away with a real excitement about the challenge to talk less and have my students do all the heavy lifting talk-wise this coming year. It is great that I was able to take this class over the summer of a "looping up" year. I had most of these students last year, so I have confidence that they are ready to take on more responsibility and know they and their families will trust me even when the curriculum looks a little flipped around ( ex: more experiential learning coming at the beginning of the unit). I loved that other folks in the class were working on other topics that will be relevant to my curriculum--particularly Wendy's work in Plants! I'll be sure to steal all those great ideas! Thanks so much everyone for a super class!

This course has been so cool for me- I have gotten to read and reflect on many things that as an SLP I haven't even labeled before - I know so much more about intentional planning taking into consideration genre and mode and the continuums- I just feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to engage in the F2F and then online portion of this course. I am looking at things through a different lens and am really seeing how I can not only very intentionally support my ELL students but also the regular education teachers that I work with

I feel very fortunate to have been able to learn about the mode continuum. I think it was a great framework to help me be more intentional in planning scaffolds and launching units in a more engaging way that can capitalize on students' existing linguistic resources. I found it helpful to rehearse how I would initiate and promote student conversations around a very specific topic.

In my opinion, the mode continuum and the portion of Emily's course on questioning put together made for a interesting challenge on curriculum design! I think my students, particularly those with lower levels of proficiency in the target language (Spanish or English) will benefit from what I was able to plan this summer. Thank you!

As I reflect on the course and review some of the information presented, I am pleased that I was equipped with many ideas that can bring theory into practice. The opening chapters of the Gibbons book presented the premise that high-challenge classrooms are the goal and that they will require high levels of language support. This mirrors the goals of our school and outlined in our SIP plan. Gibbons also emphasized the use of students' language as resources. Honoring L1 is also a focal point of our dual language instruction. The emphasis on scaffolding instruction aligned nicely with my current teaching assignment as a DLL reading interventionist. Finding points of entry was not so difficult then and I appreciate the many activities explicitly described in the text. The alphabet book was suggested and I researched some resources online that can help make this a regular part of my practice. The use of visuals for literate talk will also be implemented more fully. The Gibbons text and the ideas shared by teachers in this course continue to challenge me to be mindful about language and explicitly teach it for student success. I believe that the Gibbons book study and the author's other works will be invaluable resources for educators and I know that I will refer to them regularly for professional growth. Thank you.

I never would have known that I could have learned so much in a short amount of time! It is great to know that much of what I do is already helping ELL students, but it's even more exciting to know that I have so many different "tools" in my toolbox that I can use to tweet many of my lessons. As with many other initiatives in education, they can be overwhelming, but with the readings and the ideas that I was able to read / obtain from this class' collaboration, I feel "armed" to dig into a new school year. I would really like to expand my three posts to other units/classes this year. I'm a bit nervous because we have a completely new curriculum for the ELA department at the high school, and I have three preps. "Baby steps" and "tweeking" will be my favorite buzz words this year. I want to do more with experiential learning because I want my students to realized that learning does not have a deadline on it. It should continue to happen long after high school, and by giving them positive learning activities, I hope this will happen. The plot line picture idea is one of my favorites because when I teach literature, I want my students to know how it can relate to similar situations. This "tool" can help me show that to all learners. Another goal of mine is to increase the oral language in my class. ELL students gain so much from the more interactions they have with the spoken language, so more turn and talk sessions will happen this year. And finally, I have a few tricks to us with vocabulary. Part of our ELA training involved close reading strategies that involves identifying unknown words. Now I can add to that a picture element in addition to context clues. Because of this class, I feel like a have a few more strategies that I can easily incorporate without feeling overwhelmed, and the best part is my ELL students will benefit! Thanks for all of your ideas!

This has been a very rich, collaborative learning experience for me! My most important take-away is how important both the "macro and micro" levels of scaffolding are for setting students up for successful academic language and content learning in their L2. Higher levels of learning depend on planning first for the macro-scaffolding and then skillfully providing interactional (micro-) contingent, scaffolding that is teacher-guided and uses message abundancy. My goal is to pay more close attention to the interactional scaffolding and message abundancy that I provide my students. My practice will definitely be changed by this learning experience. Thanks!

As I reflect on this course, I truly appreciated the F2F learning session! It was great to be able to discuss and learn together that day - little did I know our learning was just beginning and would grow so much in the past 4 weeks. As an instructional coach, I took the opportunity to reflect as a coach AND also as a classroom teacher through planning for coaching cycles and a specific content area. The feedback I received was invaluable (when I remembered to share my work with the class!) I really enjoyed reading all of posts and felt as though I was having helpful reflective and planning conversations with all of you. Seeing that deepening language development is one of our school improvement goals, I will be using this class and Emily's class in order to strengthen my coaching practices including, co-planning, co-teaching, observing & reflecting. Thanks to all of you for the feedback and thinking around such a complex topic. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Wow, what powerful learning! For me, the greatest strength of this course was its open format. It really worked for me. I was able to think out classroom application and links to supporting teacher team planning. As the course closes, I am planning how to integrate SFL into my Biliteracy Development Course. I am also looking at our school district's M-F framework for whole group instruction and thinking about how mode continuum might work within their proposal. Pam and Katie, want to collaborate on leading a pd session at one of the days away? Thanks to this fabulous instructor and thanks to classmates for supporting my growth.

I am especially grateful that it allowed me the space & time to reflect on my practice & truly dig deeper. This does not, really cannot, happen during the school year due to so many other things that are in need of our attention. I feel more ready to go back to work & I credit that to this course. My summer mind has not strayed so far from my work mind and for that I am eternally grateful.

This course has been valuable to me in preparing materials for some focus areas in which I wanted to be better prepared. As a resource teacher, I have less opportunity to design and teach complete units on my own. I very much enjoy being able to co-plan and co-teach with several teachers. I was new to my district last year and focused on getting to know and supporting teachers, students, and curriculum. I ended the year with goals and plans, many of which I was able to organize and prepare this summer. I feel sure the reflection and planning through this course will help me improve my instruction in September and throughout the year. I wish everyone a great 2016-2017 school year!
