Shortlist is a mens lifestyle magazine with a focus on tech, films/tv , gaming and style. It reflects a modern mans cultural interests and curates and writes original content accordingly.

A focus is primarily on whats 'in' and trending and there are many articles concerned with what to wear, buy, act and even smell like. With article titles such as 'Spruce like an Olympian' it is concerned with solving superficial worries of the modern egocentric 'metrosexual'. Its language is commanding and imperative . The aforementioned article title has a tag line of 'essential items' meaning it is a must have and catering to the 'Keeping up with the Joneses' discourse of the modern man. It is fostering a culture of urgency and attaching opinion to predominatly male items.

Content tends to be easily digestible but written in a style that accommodates to the educated level of a ABC1 audience. Whilst the content is predominantly opinions on cultural items it can sometimes veer into investigative journalism. An issue has an investigative piece on artificial testosterone binges in sporting. This suggests even when the content is traditionally investigative , it is still concerned with overly masculine ideas.

Fitness and health is also a focus in Shortlist further suggesting the superficial concerns of the male readership. It is worth noting that any lifestyle qualms seen in magazines catering for woman are notable by their absence in Shortlist, suggesting it is not a concern for men.

One of their sports articles details 'why Andy Murray is a British sportsman to be proud of'. Its suggesting that even when commenting on sport it is in the context of masculine ideals for the reader to strive to.

The workplace is often cited for content as it is believed all the readers have high powered careers. 'Being yourself at work could make you happier and more productive'

Target Audience

Shortlist aims to cater to a male ABC1 audience that is career driven and live by a 'work hard play hard' mantra.

They tend to have a high pressure job that is city based. They are commuters and copies of Shortlist will be in circulation where commuters congregate such as train stations, airports and city centre locations.

Shortlist is a masculine driven text and this is prevalent throughout its messaging. Take its advertising for example, a Hugo Boss double page spread ad for a fragrance is one of the first things we see in an edition to hand. It has the tagline 'man of today' echoing the desires of the target audience to be at the forefront of todays aspirational man. The ad attaches Gerald Butler in a sophisticated suit , this mirrored with the tagline communicates to the readership a male ideal that they can strive for having applied VALs theory of Strivers but also Achievers into the mix. These are your C1 men who are ambitious and career driven and also your AB men that have already achieved status. If the advertising doesn't feed into the man they are, it will apply to their ambitions and the man they want to be.
The readership will be C1+, meaning they are affluent and educated. ABC men are driven by success in comparison to working class men.
The ethnic makeup of the seems to be predominately white to reflect society however there are ethnic minorities included to diversify to an extend.

The Shortlist man will typically be 25 to 40. We know this as men of interest included within the issues i.e. celebrities almost always fall under that age range

The target audience are thought to be technically competent and have a online presence suiting the age and ability of a Shortlist male. Shortlist have recently announced they plan to completely move online. I believe this a decision made on the basics they know their target audience to be someone who will readily access the articles online .However they may not retain their distribution figures as men any not actively seek it out as it used to be readily available in trains stations etc.
They have active social media presence. Take their twitter account for example , where they curate content by primarily linking to their website.

The website serves a s hub for all their content and the reader is encouraged to use it. The print format of the magazine has recently been taken out of publication so the online format is the only way to access the content. It has clear headings at the top of the website such as films tv music and tech, clearly signposting all the content for the user. Its articles are rarely longform and mirror the easily digestible glance and gaze aesthetic of the print version. However the digestible content doesn't translate to simplified content as it is still aimed at an ABC audience.

The style of the magazine is bold, sharp and clean. It uses bold colours and ones typically associated with masculinity ; blues, reds and greens. Article lengths tend to be easily digestible with a glance and gaze aesthetic to accommodate the busy lifestyle of the professional male. They are short and snappy and rarely have long-form articles. A more in depth article may still only have a double page spread. We see this in 'mutual disrespect' a feature that detailed the history of boxing rivalry. This is to ensure the cater to the commuter who has perhaps only 1-2 hours at his disposable to read the magazine.

The language tends to be imperative, commanding and instructs on how to behave, look ,w atch and do. A recent article is 'You’re going to want to cop these new NikeLab Air Safari trainers' . The language used is beyond suggestive and is in-fact commanding. It is creating a culture of immediacy for the reader and instructing that they do not miss out.
