Tension and atmosphere has been created through fearful, uneasy and uncomfortable descriptions and adjectives. “And again great frowning rocks guarded us boldly...we could hear the rising wind, for it moaned and whistled through the rocks.” Personification is used to create an unsettling and uneasy mood, which suggests that the setting is dark, gloomy and spine chilling. This makes the reader feel tense. “Rising wind” is pathetic fallacy and it indicates that the wind is intimidating and unwelcoming. This creates a panicky and daunting mood and makes the reader feel alarmed and shaken. “Moaned” suggests that it is unpleasant and creates an uncomfortable atmosphere. This makes the reader feel intimidated and frightened.

Bram Stoker creates a threatening atmosphere by intimidate the reader by making the reader feel anxious. In the text, it states: “Soon we were hemmed in with trees”. The word “hemmed” means surrounded and restricted, this suggests that the writer was trying to make the reader think that they are trapped and caged in the forest. This makes the reader feel anxious and Isolated from everything. Another piece evidence to prove our point is: “The baying of the wolves sounded nearer and nearing”. The word bay means a loud bark or howl and suggests that the wolves were calling to other of the same species to hunt and surround the reader. Also, the use of repitition makes the reader paranoid and the writer is giving the reader a sense of anxiousness making them feel like prey.

Bram Stoker creats an uncanny and eerie setting by incorporating pathetic fallacy. He does this using the quote “It grew colder and colder.. and fine, powdery snow began to fall.” The increasing coldness is related to death, isolation and misery which gives a sense of eeriness and the emotion of the narrator feeling isolated and frightened.

The writer uses pathetic fallacy to create a uneasy and threatening atmosphere as he describes “The rising wind, for it moaned and whistled thought the rocks”. The words “rising wind” creates an uneasy atmosphere for wind usually makes you feel calm however in this situation it makes you feel uncomfortable and pushed. In addition to that, “moaned and whistled” are sounds which are made when people are in pain or uncomfortable which gives the reader a feeling that the place is unwelcoming and threatening.

The author uses personification to create a frightening atmosphere. Stoker writes that the “wind moaned and whistled “. He uses the onomatopoeic word “moaned” which suggests pain and sickness and creates a feeling of misery. The use of personification makes the reader feel that the wind is unhappy with the arrival of the stranger.

Bram Stoker uses personification to create an unsettling armosphere. An instance of this would be when Stoker writes that the “...wind...moaned and whistled...” The use of personification saying that the “...wind...moaned...” makes the reader think like the wind is displeased, angry or upset with the newcomers. It may also hint to something tragic or unfortunate going to take place later on on their journeyIt is also pathetic fallacy, because the mood is already gloomy adding to the unsettling atmosphere, leading to a build up of tension. This could relate to the newcomers isolation, and only being the two men and their horses.

The author creates a threatning atmospher through the use of the unsettling surroundings. We know this because the author uses the quote “frowning rocks guarded by us boldly on either side.” This indicates that the rocks are guarding him. Which makes the persona feel like he’s being guarded in a prison cell. The word “boldly” suggests that the rocks are very strong and vivid.
