Taos was the long time home of famous westward explorer kit carson, who carried out the killings of hundreds of native americans. there is a controversial obelisk at the santa fe post office in his honor which i personally believe should be removed. Kit carson was one of the first to push american colonialism into the western US, causing the natural balance maintained by the native tribes to be upset as trappers like him killed thousands of animals for their pelts and water was diverted from rivers for agriculture, leading to the modern problems of droughts and animal endangerment/extinction.
