450-million year old bacteria

By: Cosette B.
http://www.livescience.com/59077-hospital-superbug-origins.html

Enterococcus is a bacteria that most likely first formed four hundred and fifty million years ago. It was supposedly living in the bowels of species that were once living in water but evolved so that they are able to live on land. Most bacteria in aquatic life is spread through excrement and the wet environments allowed for them to thrive but as the creatures switched to land the bacteria would dry up and discontinue spreading. This bacteria in particular evolved with the animals it created a thick outer layer. Recently this bacteria has been found in hospitals and it is very dangerous. The scientists were able to discover the history of this bacteria by watching its growth patterns and studying their genomes. This "super bug" is resistant to antibiotics and cleaning chemicals making it nearly impossible to get rid of. This is usually found in the gut but can be found in other places. It also is the cause of many hospital caused infections. With this discovery scientists plan to study this bacteria further in order to make antibiotics and disinfectants that would be just as resilient as this super bug if not more.

'Heart attack risk' for common painkillers

Henriikka
http://www.bbc.com/news/health-39858179
There may be a link between taking high doses of common anti-inflammatory painkillers. The risk would be greatest in the first 30 days of taking the drugs. But also other factors - not just the pills - could be involved. researchers suggest taking these Nsaid painkillers to treat pain and inflammation(=tulehdus) could raise the risk of heart attacks even in the first week of use. for example, someone was prescribed a high dose of a painkiller because of severe pain, and then had a heart attack in the following week, it would be "pretty hard" to tell whether the heart attack had been caused by the painkiller or by whatever was the reason for prescribing it in the first place.
It could even be down to something else entirely. People with heart problems must be careful when using drugs but also they should not be using drugs at all. People should generally take the lowest dose of drugs for the shortest time possible. The two main issues are that the risks are relatively small, and for most people who are not at high risk of a heart attack, these findings have minimal implications.

The older you get, the higher the risk to develop dementia. And with the population constantly ageing and growing, we're bound to have increased numbers of dementia. People also survive other illnesses such as heart diseases more than they used to, which increases the amount of people developing dementia by quite a bit as well.
Another explanation as to why the amount of people with dementia has increased would be that we have a better understanding of dementia than before, resulting in increased reporting of dementia on death certificates.
Lastly, people with dementia do not usually die to it, but rather due to other reasons. Even though it's possible to die to dementia, the cause of death is still more likely to be something like pneumonia, for example.

A graph in the article shows that the dementia numbers are steadily decreasing.

- Death certificate = kuolintodistus
- Pneumonia = keuhkokuume

The risk could be greatest during the first 30 days of using drugs. Scientists say there could be other actors involved too, not just the pills. Scientists focused on people who use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (= ei-steroidiset tulehduskipulääkkeet) because doctors prescribed them, rather than those who bought the painkillers over the counter. According to researchers taking Nsaid painkillers to relieve pain or treat inflammation could increase the risk of heart attack – even if they are used for one week. However there are a lot of factors that make it difficult to be absolutely certain of the link, scientists say. But are the painkillers absolutely to blame? Kevin McConway, emeritus professor of statistics at The Open University, said that it seems possible that the painkillers aren’t cause of the extra heart attacks. It is difficult to tell whether a heart attack is due to painkillers. Everyone should weigh up the risks and benefits of taking high doses of these common painkillers. It’s hard to estimate the risk potential.

The fossil of that dinosau is small but if it would have grown into an adult weighing more than 1,000kg. Those dinosaurs may have been common around 100 million years ago. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, thousands of dinosaur eggs were collected from rocks of Henan, China, by local farmers. Scientists in China and Canada compared the fossil to previously described dinosaur species and determined that it is a new species. The eggs found alongside the fossil are of the largest known type of dinosaur egg.

This is especially true for the ability to be balanced at all times. We use certain muscles to stay upright and catch ourselves when we fall and these particular muscles fade as time goes by. A certain group of scientists discovered that this can be helped with the use of an exoskeleton. This prototype uses the muscles movement as a warning system. It will feel the muscles being used and put force into the opposite direction to stop the process of falling. They discovered that the person wearing this exoskeleton would fall a lot less compared to a person that was not wearing it. Exoskeletons have been very popular since they want to help people with paralysis. Sadly most are bulky and heavy which is difficult for younger subjects and people of lighter weight. There are also still a lot of bugs that need to be fixed. This is still a great start to a more advanced “suit”.

Difficult words-

1. algorithm : a process that if followed correctly will give an answer to calculations or problems

2. exoskeleton : a skeleton that is on the outside rather than the inside.

3. intuitive : its what you believe is right. She was inspired by her daughter who couldn't find clothes that she wanted. The problem wasn't only what kind of clothes are offered but also the fit of the clothes. Sharon said"I think it's one thing that the girls' clothes are very fitted and small, and it's another that they're in such direct contrast to what you find on the boys' side, and those two things send a pretty strong message about what they're supposed to look like, dressed to be slim and to be fit." The massage that these kind of clothing send is that girls must have a perfect body and ideal weight. These massages have made more than half of girls as young as 6 to 8 think their ideal weight is thinner than their current size.

Self-consciousness=itsetunto
entrepreneur=yrittäjä
