Mrs. O's Two Possible Big Idea Statements for Dallas Winston:

Sometimes, gallantry wears a leather jacket and looks like a hoodlum.
Dallas Winston had a heart composed of fire and ice.
"He died violent and young and desperate...But Johnny was right. He died gallant"(Hinton 154). I chose these statements and this passage for Dallas because like all of us, Dallas was a brilliant mixture of light and darkness. Some of the light was muted by how difficult Dallas' life was, but the "star" was still there in him if someone took the time to look up and look deeper.

The character I've been following is Pony. My big idea statement for him is Stay Gold. Pony realizes after the rumble that he doesn't hate to Socs anymore. "...I don't hate the Socs any more...they shouldn't hate..."(Hinton 143) Also, those are the last words Johnny said to Pony. Those two words are very special to him. Pony doesn't like to fight and that is a good thing. He likes to look at the good things in life.

I have been following Johnny. I think that he died a hero. Even though he had parents that didn't care about him, he still stayed strong. My Big Idea for Johnny is, "I caught one quick look at his face; it was red-marked from falling embers and sweat-streaked, but he grinned at me. He wasn't scared either. That was the only time I could think of when I saw him without that defeated, suspension look in his eyes. He looked like he was having the time of his life."(Hinton 92) I chose this as my big idea statement because it shows that even though that fire ended up killing Johnny, he had the time of his life inside of it while he was saving those kids.

He didn't deserve to die, but the lives he saved made him lose his own. A golden line for this is, "Don't remember how Johnny was your buddy, don't remember that he didn't want to die." (Hinton 156)

Dallas stepped up by helping Johnny and Pony escape from the law. When Johnny died, Dallas fell apart and couldn't take that pain. He decided to end it and by that, he stepped back down. "So he finally broke" (Hinton 152)

I followed Dally. I think that the big idea for Dally is "Tough on the outside, soft on the inside." Dally overall was a tough guy. He didn't wear his emotions, but inside, he really cared for Johnny. Johnny was someone he loved, and the only thing he loved. Without Johnny, Dally went crazy. He didn't think he could live life without Johnny, so he wanted to die. He got what he wanted, and Pony knew that. "He died violent and young and desperate" (Hinton 154). I chose this line for my golden line because he didn't want to die when Johnny was here, but Johnny dying wasn't something he thought he could handle, and he ended up dying violently, young, and desperate.

I chose this because Dally always acted tough, mean and always hid his feelings for others. Not that he had any, but when it came to Johnny's death you realize that a person that seems so tough, has become so weak and has finally reached his breaking point that nobody thought he had.

" So he finally broke." It makes sense for Johnny, because he was in two life-or-death situations in the span of a few days, along with Ponyboy. The worst of him came out in the scene at the park, where he was super scared and murdered a Soc in fear. He was too afraid for himself, and he didn't want a remake of what happened with Bob last time. His best actions came at the abandoned church, sacrificing himself for little kids who he didn't even know. "First you and the black-haired kid climbing in that window, and then the tough looking kid going back in to save him. Mrs. O'Briant and I think you were sent straight from heaven. Or are you just professional heroes or something?"(Hinton 95).He only cared about getting those children out alive.

As we have been reading the outsiders, I have been following Johnny. I think that a good big idea statement for him is, being good comes at a cost. "We dropped the last of the kids out as the front of the church started to crumble. Johnny shoved me toward the window. "Get out"(Hinton 93)! "Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold..." The pillow seemed to sink a little, and Johnny died"(Hinton 148). I Chose this as my big Idea, because Johnny wanted to help those kids, and Pony before himself. He got caught in the fire and died. Johnny's bravery, saved many, but came at the great cost of his own life. I chose these statements to support my big idea, because they show Johnny's death, and him saving Pony and the kids.

The reason I would give this to him is because of what he did after Johnny's death. He committed an indirect 'suicide' by going in front of all those cops. This was a way for him to mourn with Johnny's death. He should've kept on going, but he couldn't handle it.
"He was dead even before he hit the ground. But I knew that was what he wanted, even as the lot echoed with the cracks of shots, even as I begged silently- please not him... not him and Johnny both" (Hinton 154). It says there that that was what Dally really wanted. To just end his life.

At the beggining of the book, right away, I noticed that Dally didn't really care what others thought of him, no care in the world, and he definitely did not care about the law. But, this changed throughout the book. My big idea statement for Dally would be, "Push through the pain." I chose this because even when times get tough God is still in control and we just need to push through the pain and trust in him. I think if Johnny would have heard more things like this he would have changed his mind about things. "Easy, buddy, easy, there's nothing we can do now." I chose this because sometimes in life there is truly nothing we can do that will make things better. We can pray. That is all that we can do.

He didn't realize how little time he had left until he was dying from the burns and the broken back.
