Lasseter applied to CalArts in 1975, an animation program start by Walt DIsney in 1961, for student to learn traditional Disney-style animation. Lasseter made two animated short films being  The Lady and the Lamp (1978) and Nitemare (1980) which got him his dream job working at Walt Disney animation. After seeing the computer animation in Tron he was impressed and he wanted to see the potential of the computer graphics. He tried experimenting using it mixing it with 2D animated characters with 3D backgrounds. He later got a directorial role on a project at Disney being The Brave Little Toaster. He want use to computer animation in the film to further experiment with it can do. Ed Hanson, head of Walt Disney Studios at the time, didn't  have faith in the idea. Only if the computer graphics could made the film budget cheaper or quicker, he would more inclined on the idea. Lasseter disagreed.
