Grew up in Alhambra. Identified as gay woman, married in 2008 to a woman, have 2 kids (7, 8 y.o). Came out to the family at 24. Came out to a healthcare professional at 22. Went to pharmacy school in San Francisco in the 1990’s, during the AIDS crisis. Career has focused on HIV care. She worked in HIV clinics for many years, with many gay physicians, pharmacists,
and other healthcare professionals. Many LGBT healthcare professionals gravitated toward HIV/ ID during the 1990’s and
2000’s. Her wife is also a healthcare professional. She is an ID physician. They met during residency. In retrospect, she realized she preferred to have gay or lesbian healthcare provider just for her own comfort level. She does not currently have a primary care physician that she regularly sees because her old one is not available. She does not know another gay or lesbian primary care provider right now.
When her wife was looking for an OB/GYN, she asked her friends for a referral to a lesbian
doctor. She answered every survey about lesbian healthcare perspective that was forwarded to her by friends. There were only 3 in her entire adult life.
She appreciates that USC has this forum available to students to gain a diversity of patient’s
point of view from LGBT community and needs. She has been fortunate and been healthy.
