March 6, 1857: Dred Scott v. Sandford Court Case

The Dred Scott v. Sandford Court Case was a decision taken in the United States Supreme Court to address the issue that Black African Americans were not able to enjoy the rights and privileges present for common White American citizens.

This case is important to the context of US history because it helped get the nation closer to the Civil War. This is because enslaved people had no rights and were not citizens according to the final decision, showing that Congress had no authority to prohibit slavery in the US. Later on, slave states would no longer have to honor the "once free, always free" rule.

The court case is separated from several different important dates in American history because of its caused controversy and main objectives, as it is not a positive outcome but it opened a different perspective of a constant issue, as it is, slavery.

Source: https://www.archives.gov/milestone-documents/dred-scott-v-sandford#:~:text=In%20this%20ruling%2C%20the%20U.S.,slavery%20from%20a%20Federal%20territory.

January 31, 1865: 13th Amendment is Established

The 13th Amendment is a law that states how slavery or involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crimes, is no longer accepted and legal in the United States.

This is one of the most important dates as it permanently impacted American society as it's possible to see through the civil rights movements. As slavery was abolished, black African Americans were more able to fight for their rights as American citizens and form movements that put them in their current empowered role.

It's different from several different events as amendments would commonly address political and economic roles, but not that often social roles.

Source: https://www.archives.gov/milestone-documents/13th-amendment#:~:text=The%2013th%20Amendment%20to%20the%20United%20States%20Constitution%20provides%20that,place%20subject%20to%20their%20jurisdiction.%22

The Treaty of Ghent was an agreement signed by the United States and Britain that stated how the British would renounce claims of the Northwest territory of the United States, leading to both nations working together to end the slave trade.

This treaty was able to end the War of 1812, known as a war that impeached several American citizens in British boats. It was able to lead the acknowledgement of national powers around the world about the strength and well-structured economic and political systems of the United States, fostering nationalism and setting up the United States to become one of the strongest countries of all time.

It differs from other important dates mainly through its relevance in international terms as the United States has had several important events throughout history that stand out a bit more than the Treaty of Ghent, even though it was this treaty that provided the United States with the recognition and respect that is currently present.

Source: https://www.archives.gov/milestone-documents/treaty-of-ghent#:~:text=A%20meeting%20in%20Belgium%20of,toward%20ending%20the%20slave%20trade.

October 29, 1929: Black Tuesday

Black Tuesday was a terrible stock market crash that started one of the worst economic struggles of all history: The Great Depression. The catastrophic decline caused by this crash was unbelievable as growing bank loans and higher interest rates destroyed the economy little by little.

Its impact makes it well-known as one of the most disastrous events in American history due to its impact in citizens' lives, causing banks to fall in bankrupt, people to lose thousands, companies to lose millions, and unfortunately, many increases in suicides rates. It even caused controversy around politics due to people blaming everything on President Hebert Hoover.

It's not recognized as other dates because the first day did not impact stocks and US economy as much as the actual Great Depression and its progress.

Source: https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/black-tuesday/

March 12, 1947: The Truman Doctrine is Signed

The Truman Doctrine was a policy speech given by President Harry S. Truman that announced how the US would provide economic, military, and political aid to democratic nations that were threatened by authoritarian forces.

This doctrine not only shifted from US withdrawal to possible intervention across the world, but it provided a considerable advantage for the victory against the Soviet Union in the Cold War. The fall of the Soviet Union would signify a supreme American achievement to defeat authoritarian forces and even shape its political, military, and economic efficiency through the years to this point.

It is not as well known as several different events because of how its impact took a while to actually show up since it was a progressive indirect impact more than a direct outcome as several different well-known events in American history are. Its difference falls in the fact that the speech did not completely impact social aspects across the United States either.

Source: https://history.state.gov/milestones/1945-1952/truman-doctrine
