This is significant to the revolution because it shows the end of the movement. It was the moment that the Haitian people became truly independent and free.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>France officially gains control of the Western half of the island of Hispaniola, previously owned by the Spanish. It is renamed Saint Domingue. This is significant to the revolution because it is the beginning of French plantation owners that treated the people of previous Hispaniola so terribly. It starts the resentment towards the French.</div>]]></description>

         <title>News of the French Revolution reaches Saint Domingue, summer of 1789</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Because white plantation and slave owners refused to abolish slavery in Saint Domingue, hundreds of white and mixed raced people were killed and thousands of plantations were destroyed. Toussaint Louverture becomes a leader, because even though he was free during the rebellion he secretly helped motivate slaves to demand their freedom. This is significant to the revolution because it shows slaves rising up and taking more control. The enslaved people were more motivated to fight.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>21,000 soldiers are sent to Saint Domingue to reinstate slavery, and Toussaint is captured and brought to France. While Toussaint is imprisoned, Napoleon conceeds, bringing his men out of Saint Domingue. This is significant to the revolution because the revolution's main leader was captured and imprisoned. However, even without their leader the people still fought back well enough to make Napoleon conceed.</div>]]></description>

This is significant to the revolution because it shows progress towards how the native people were treated.
