quarrelsome, nervous, they have no limits and i I'm worried about how they will behave, especially as they grow up, to their classmates and in general, in their school life.

I suppose I'm lucky for I have never encountered hate speech regarding my school or anyone in it. There have been several cases of cyber bullying but never so extreme as to be considered hate speech. I think the first step has to be to report it to the authorities, but I don't know how effective it would prove to be.

I’ve never encounter an online hate speech incident in my school (whatever the form of expression and/or the forms of hatred) - which does not mean that it does not exist.
However, as the picture below shows, I believe that the problem requires wisdom, tolerance (which does not mean permissiveness), compassion, empathy, and love.

There were some problems with hate speech in my school, but not online. There are two children in the 5 form that represents Rome nationality. Other pupils had some racist behaviour toward them. It was a real challenge for me to stop their hate speaking. Fortunately, with the help of the whole teaching staff we ensure pupils they are the same, they have the same rights and the first one is their right to be not bullied. Now they are all friends. I think the best way to resolve this problem is to speak to your pupils. If it doesn't work you should involve the principal, parents and sometimes even police.

Till now, I haven't encountered such an incident in the school. But, I have read many posts about hate speech, seen many videos with victims of hate speech and have met many tweets with hate speech. I loved the video above (one of the best for me in this mooc). The question is "what we do" about it. Awareness, real name, think before post, are some of the solutions. Plus, we the teachers must discuss these issues with our students.

I personally have never encountered hate speech in my school, but on virtual places, social as facebook often, just click on "I like" to express my consent to a photo, a person, a story, etc. With the same ease you can express your dissent. Fortunately I have never encountered hate speech online.

But, in the schools where I worked this year, there were guys that called themselves racists, again and again, during discussions, without being too shy. They said they were afraid of people came from Africa although they haven’t ever known immigrants.

My colleagues and I looked for trying the reasons and we understood that maybe they reported only discourses that they just heard in their families or in the town.

I live in an area of Italy often famous for bad news. And I often see hate speech from other people living in other parts of our country. Racism and hatred even against a part of the country does not stop. There are political parties that usually use hate speech to separate and divide people. I've never encountered hate speech incident at school. But sometimes a student says that he appreciates a national or international politician who is publicly a racist.
In this case my approach is soft. I try to speak and explain the position of the politician towards immigrants and other ethnic groups, in order to get him/her to understand the risks. Well, it's not easy! In Italy teachers shouldn't talk about politics at school even if ithis is impossible because for example every time one talks about sustainability, against pollution or saying that we say we are open to others, etc., that's pure politics. But we can make students learning history and nowadays events in order to better understand what can be hidden by certain positions.

I've never been confronted with such an experience during my school career but I think I was lucky . Nevertheless I collaborate with my colleagues with parents and with our eTwinning partners trying to grow sensibility toward a safe and respectful approach to the net . I found the video above really great and I will see it with my classes . I will ask them to try to think to something like this for their school mates and also for their project partners . I found the online survey on online hate speech very useful and interesting . I think that as said in the document "it is essential that we work collaboratively to understand, prevent and respond to online hate" and that schools can really "play an important role in challenging hateful behavior . I found a great help to do that by constructively engaging our students through eTwinning projects

Although, I see in the media from time to time such things happening among youngsters and I know there are many students in Sweden that has this kind of dreadful experience. Some times they even get so big that it gets out of control and the mob gets bigger and bigger. Unfortunately I have encountered such an event. The two students have written offensive messages to each other through social media. Then the subject grew. Fights in school. I witnessed this situation unfortunately. It was a bad experience. But similar events are common. I am a little worried in this case. I could not be cool. Thank goodness students did not do any harm to each other. But it was bad. Then we separated the students. The incident was closed and both of them were punished.

I have never come across hate speech in my school maybe it's because of lack of Internet intructions in some african countries. But I mostly see it in social media e.g newspapers,Television, Radios and Facebook and many more.

I have heard about hate speach at the schools I have visited for the workshops of internet safety. Usually the teachers inform me about it. In one incident a 7 year old boy fron Albania had to change school because his classmates where offending him for his country of origin. In the new school (it is multicultural, 40% of its students have origin from other countries than Greece and there is a strategy and policies to embody students from different countries and religions, parents are aware and supportive too) he had no problems.
Another incident was of a 14 years old girl with disabilities. She was constantly cyberbullied, from her classmates calling her names. She could not unerdstand it, but her teachers reported it to the headmaster and workshops had taken place for all the students about inernet safety.

Have you ever encountered an (online) hate speech incident in your school? If so, what kind of incident was it? And how did you approach it?
It is not so simple to encounter an occasion of hate speech online, whilst it is sometimes common not online. In the second case in Italy we teacher can report these actions on class register and this influences conduct final mark and the possibility of a disciplinary sanction (like keeping the pupil away from school for a limited period).
It is more difficult to face cases of online hate speech because we do not usually have online contact on social media on internet (it may bring to privacy problems). But once a student asked me help because he felt harassed by a bully at school and online. He made me listening to some audio records and texts he received. I told him to ignore the bully and not to delete any message, because they could be used to prove bully's actions. Then the class teacher council decided to a disciplinary report to the bully, voting also a school suspension for some days

At our school we encountered issues related to hate speech. One of the students forgot to sign out from gmail and another student sent few emails to the teacher with name-calling and mean words. After a few days we managed to find out who was. The student was punished and it was a very good lesson for everyone. Now students are more careful about signing out of their accounts.

I have never encountered a major hate speech incident in my school. Nevertheless, from time to time, we witness unpleasant remarks that some pupils address to their classmates. I have never directly addressed hate speech issues in my class. However it happened that we talked about hate speech in reference to Italian Minister for Integration Cecile Kyenge. Today Mrs. Kyenge is a member of the European Parliament. This wonderful woman has always tried to promote the culture of racial integration and peaceful coexistence. Unfortunately many uncivilized Italians have unjustly attacked her with a great deal of racial hatred on social networks. The former minister is from Congo but she is an Italian citizen. In our school we have had a few incidents, which have occurred outside school days but have been dealt with at school because of the nature of the incidents. One happened in my class, as one of my students was discriminated and bullied verbally in WhatsApp via an anonymous person. We talked about the situation in class and the other students decided to support the bullied student online. That worked well and brought the students closer to each other.

I never heard of hate speech in my school. However with my students I often analyze and discuss about what we can read on facebook and other social network. I try to develop the critical meaning.

A few weeks ego, i discovered a case of online hate speech involving two parents, that were criticizing a their son's friend lying about his economical position. I was not in possibility to do something, but i thought about the importance to give a right example of behaviour to our children and pupils.

I haven't encountered a hate speech incident in my school. My pupils said that a member of their Clash of Clains clan do it but we haven't yet discussed this topic.

I never had hate speech in my class, but I know some other classes. It is very important to be be prepared and to prepare students.
From my point of view, there are many negative role models in politics, sports, etc. This is disappointing and makes things worse.
