Several businesses during this time were growing. Small businesses became huge with the spread of railroads, and machines. Many small-scale farms became large agricultural developments. This allowed farmers to produce a lot of crops at one time. The railroads then made it easier for them to ship their goods across the country.

In 1856, Henry Bessemer created the first inexpensive way to convert iron ore to steel. His creation was known as the "Bessemer Process". His invention led to the building of several other things. People used steel to build machines, bridges, railroads, barbed wire, and they even used it to build skyscrapers.

Edwin Drake was the first person to ever successfully drill oil. He did this by using a steam engine drill. Drake was known as the "Father of the Petroleum Industry" for his invention. His invention allowed for several other things to happen. People began to use kerosene oil in their lamps.

Mass Production

Once machines and railroads became common, people began to mass produce their goods. Machines allowed them to make their products much faster. The machines also made it easier for people to find jobs. People didn't need to have a huge range of skill, now they only needed to know one thing. The railroads also allowed them to mass produce. Once they made all their goods, it was easy for them to ship them out. They could send out loads as big as they needed.

Specialize Definition

Specialize means to concentrate on and become expert in a particular subject or skill. Many workers around this time began to only need one skill versus knowing how to build something huge. For example, if someone worked in the car industry and spent large amounts of time building a single car, now they would only need to know how to put a single wheel onto a car.

What I Learned?

The most interesting thing I learned this unit was about the creation of time zones. Before this unit, I never really thought about why or how time zones were created. I now know that they were created because of the spread of railroads. After the Transcontinental Railroad was finished, people began to ship their goods across the country; However, when people would give times for the arrival of goods, it would not add up. If a town were to say that "The shipment will be there at 3 o'clock", that may be true for their time, but at that other town it may only be 2 o'clock.

How do I Connect with the Industrial Revolution?

When I look back on the events of the Industrial Revolution, I don't see many things to connect with, however there are a few. One of those is that throughout my life. I have seen a huge change in technology. When I was younger my parents had flip phones, and we had only one computer in our house. Now that I am older, and technology has advanced, my parents and I all have a cellphone, and my entire school has a laptop provided to them for class work. During the industrial revolution, things were advancing quickly and everyone could see the changes happening in their society.
