He was born in Dunfermline, Scotland. He and his father and law joined a movement that failed and resulted in Carnegie moving to America with his wife. They settled in Allegheny, Pennsylvania where they had friends and relatives. New York was the first truly industrialized place he had been involved with and it was a journey for him. As a young boy he worked as a bobbin boy in a cotton mill, he worked as a messenger for a telegraph company, where he was promoted to telegraph operator. With this skill he then landed a job on the Pennsylvania Railroad, where he was promoted to superintendent at age 24. He read a lot and most of his education came from the books that he read. His boss led him into the investment world when he in formed Carnegie of the sale of ten shares in the Adams Express Company. In working with the railroad he developed other interests. Theodore Woodruff approached Andrew with an offer to have a share in the Woodruff Sleeping Car Company and Carnegie accepted. By age 30, Carnegie had amassed business interests in iron works, steamers on the Great Lakes, railroads, and oil wells. He was greatly involved in the steel industry and built the Carnegie Steel Corporation which evolved into the largest steel manufacturing company in the world.
