The seventh longest on the continent and the second largest tenth in the world with a length of about 4350 kilometers. The basin area is about 795,000 square kilometers and holds over 60 million people who live off its land.</p><p><br/></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Mekong River flows through the Tibetan Plateau, a region with an average altitude of over 5,000 meters above sea level. The river then flows through the different landscapes of the region, with a diverse range of landscapes, from mountains, forests and wetlands to fertile plains and wetlands, down to its final, lower plains in the Mekong delta, and out towards the South China Sea. One of the features of its flow is very pronounced seasonal variation which is based on the influence of monsoon - leading to the wet and dry seasons. For the low-nutrient inputs feeding the terrestrial and aquatic communities that enable the extensive floodplain agriculture and rich biodiversity within the region, the hydrology of the river is essential.</p><p><br/></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Mekong River Basin, second only to the Amazon, is one the most biodiverse areas on Earth. It is home to a wide range of species, alot of them rare or miniature, such as the Irrawaddy dolphin and the giant Mekong catfish. The river serves as the lifeblood for a range of ecosystem services including drinking water, irrigation water and industrial water to hundreds of millions of people; as well as more than a billion people with a protein source from fisheries; and provides water to an incredibly productive agriculture zone in the delta-that now faces severe challenges due to land subsidence, lack of sediment load, high nutrient input and heavy pollutant load.</p>]]></description>
