Before getting into the fight with the Americans, they had been under the control of the Spanish for more than three hundred years. During the Spanish-American war, Filipinos and American fought alongside each other as allies to defeat the Spaniards on the islands. Before the conflict with America started, Emilio Aguinaldo gave his Inauguration speech declaring that the Philippine Republic is its own nation, comparing it to July 4th in America (Inauguration).

In 1999, the 100th anniversary of the war, the Philippines put out a statement asking for an apology. This shows how even now the Filipino people still have strong resentment towards the United States as hundreds of thousands of their people perished as a result of the war. Even to this day there has still yet to be a formal apology given to the Philippines from the United States Government.

Conflict was believed to have first broken out between the American Troops and the Filipinos when a Filipino revolutionary was shot and killed in 1899 by an American Soldier (Filipinos). Emilio Aguinaldo's men first started by trying to fight a conventional tactics which were ineffective against the powerful American military. This tactic led to many casualties (as shown in the image to the right) and Aguinaldo soon realized that they would have to rely on small scale guerrilla warfare tactics in order to have a chance. Although Roosevelt technically declared the war over in 1902, bouts of guerrilla warfare continued to break out until about 1906 (McCallum)

Being the first and also the youngest president of the Philippines, Emilio Aguinaldo had to bring his to prominence. Before the conflict with America began he was able to unite the country under the fact that they would soon be free. He also shed a lot of light on all of the civilian casualties the Americans caused and how devastating it was to their nation. He described the way America was treating the Philippine's to how England treated the colonies under their rule.
