Here is my current project description (which might change a bit!):
I am writing about how two novels by contemporary American author Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl and Dark Places) subvert the traditional crime novel genre's reliance on gendered stereotypes of violence. The novels do this in two ways, by destabilizing both the readers' process of reading a crime fiction novel and Flynn's own process of writing within such a formula-driven genre. The role of the reader is undermined by her inclusion of characters that exist as external, but interested, parties to the crime (true crime clubs, journalists, etc.) with whom the reader identifies. She subsequently maligns these characters and positions them as a negative, destructive force, forcing the reader to confront their own consumption of the novel's story. She undermines the formula of the crime novel itself through her inversion of various narrative techniques, including unreliable narration, traditional chronology, stereotyped roles of victim/perpetrator, and traditional narrative closure. By either inverting or eschewing these formulaic techniques, Flynn forces the reader to confront their expectations for a crime novel, which frequently entail stereotyped gendered tropes and passive consumption of violence.

During one of my classes on scottish literature, I was tasked with working on Muriel Spark's "Driver's seat," which is a book on which there are many articles, stressing how powerful texttual form in general is in Spark's novels, but no academic that I've read so far has seemed to give the text the power they claim it has, completely omitting the issue of analyzing its complex and immensely interesting form.

The reason why the form is of note is that upon careful reading it can be claimed that it resembles a stylized police report based on many of its defining characteristics. Therefore, one has to read while keeping in mind the possibility of the text becoming otherwise, it being only a possibility among a plethora of others that affirms their possibility (think Nietzsche - eternal recurrence).

An idea can be borrowed from horror theory of violence as an aesthetically generative process and in combination with Foucault's insistence that punishment have a manifestation upon the body proper to the crime (in a kind of reflection based on difference as opposed to sameness), an aesthetics of punishment can be formulated.

The novel's form can in turn attest to the problem of difference when it comes to the relation of crime and punishment and, through considering the matter through aesthetic criteria, allow for foregrounding a pragmatic thinking of the efficacy of punitive measures and rethinking their cruelty as unnecessary.

(The attempt was to outline a hole in research in the particular subject, how in turn I could fill that hole and suggest a particular link to theory and sort of movement "beyond the work" that I find a typical feature of critical theory)
