Tone: Sante maintains his informative yet sarcastic tone throughout paragraph eight through his vivid language and comprehensive examples detailing certain commonly used business practices.

Methods/Style: Sante gives examples of personal secrets, some that could be his own or ones that he has had revealed to him. Sante seems to know what happens to an ego when personal secrets are revealed, which could mean that a secret of his has been revealed before which in turn has bruised his ego.

Achievements/Effects: Sante creates what seems to be a connection to the reader as it seems like he too can relate to having personal secrets, which causes the reader to trust in Sante’s words. 

Tone: Sante’s tone starts a bit informational while not really being formal, but also not being informal at the same time. At the end of the small section however, Sante’s tone is comforting in a way when he says “....the foundations of your house would not be shaken”, which is said after he goes into personal secrets being revealed.

Sante’s writing style is persuasive. Sante uses two common examples of scandals that erupt from romantic secrecy, such as infidelity and cover ups. This is to further show that there are things that people don’t want the public to see, which is what he was trying to achieve. Sante states, “you will find yourself sending discrete sums of money to people you haven’t thought of”, this implies that the reader has to cover up their mistakes from the past, especially, as he said before, if they decide to run for office. This is because politicians have big media presences and oftentimes, they receive backlash for the things they did in the past or have said. In the sense of this paragraph though it is likely that they are providing for a secret child they have. Sante’s tone is very pessimistic and accusatory. He uses romantic words like “passion”, “erect”, and “erotic sensation” to bring in the feeling of scandal and disgrace. Reading this, there is a sense of shame for having secrets during relationships, especially after he says, “Couples often tacitly erect a whole edifice of secret, based on real or imagined causes for jealousy”.

Tone: Sante’s tone throughout this section is very critical and cynical, but at the end he mentions how secret societies once “dominated” American society which is a little misleading.

Like all types of power or value, having a secret about someone else might feel like a burden and can only be released by informing someone else.
Methods: The author uses examples of experiences and figurative language to strengthen the purpose of the text and to better connect with the audience. He uses these to allude to the fact that gossip secrets can have a form of value and are shown through examples and experiences. 
Achievement: The author's main achievement in the section was to suggest the fact that some secrets, especially gossip, have not only information but also value. Additionally, I think that the author's other achievement was to connect with the audience through the experiences that he presented, allowing the reader to better understand the secrets of gossip. 
Tone: The author describes how secret gossip can be a source of useful information and value and creates an informative and lighthearted tone throughout the section. Throughout the explanation, metaphors and figurative language are used to make the section seem lighthearted, but still very informative about gossip secrets.

His tone shifts later in the paragraph when explaining the historical significance of secret societies. This serves to make the paragraph entertaining yet educational.

Methods/style: Luc Sante's illustrative style paints the perfect picture in regards to how how elusive these types of secrets are. Such as when he says "The secret leads votaries by the nose through a maze of connected chambers"(Sante 184), this being especially versatile as it is possible to be as literal as it is figurative. Sante goes on to list various sources of close to mystical secrets, this shows the audience the many steps that are taken to avoid actually discovering the true mystical secret, and it poses a question. If one would go through all of that then how strenuous is obtaining the true mystical secret?

Achievements/Effects: What this achieves is demonstrating just how elusive this manner of secret is and the long journeys taken to discover it.

Tone: Though Sante's tone remains informative, he leans into a playful arrogance. Doing so through his listing and then seemingly looking down upon those who do not fully try to discover the mystical secrets, but he doesn't scold or admonish them for it.

Even if something is unimportant, a secret can nonetheless exist above it. In most cases, secrets lead to issues, which motivates people to uncover those concealed realities in others.

Methods/Style: Santee writes persuasively. When he talks about having a passion with your dentist and your partner demands to know what happened in the second sentence, he is demonstrating infidelity, also known as cheating. Santee uses this example to demonstrate the situations that people keep hidden from others, as well as their desire to know the truth.

Achievements/Effects: "This can be relatively harmless, or it can be a symptom of the relationship becoming a regime," Santee says. This implies that the reader should be aware that jealousy is a symptom and the beginning of a failed relationship. Jealousy causes both real and imagined problems in order to start a conflict.

Tone: The author achieves an accusatory tone to convey the shame felt when a secret is kept during a relationship.Santee's diction is strong, and he elaborates on the harm secrets in a relationship cause. He brings up multiple facts that include why atomic secrets are so important.

Methods: Sante uses a quote from William Burroughs, a well known writer, in order to begin this paragraph about atomic secrets. Although, Sante does use multiple rebuttals against society for not being able to recognize an atomic secret even if it slapped them in the face. This is specifically designed because atomic secrets are usually in code.

Achievement: Sante achieves the demonstration of how atomic secrets can change lives, and deaths, in an instant by talking about how humans altogether have one hing in common which is the ability to die no matter what and the people who posse the knowledge and 'tools' are better prepared for it. 

Tone: Although Sante's tone is informative and more serious, he is still able to recognize that atomic secrets are sacred and almost terrifying because of the unknown. (Sante 182). Specifically, in this section, Sante is referencing the idea that in each romantic life there are private aspects. Whether you are keeping something from your partner, or from others about your partner. 
 
Methods/Style: Sante uses imagery and charged words to contribute to his sentiment. He starts this section with the statement, "They run the gamut." (Sante 182). This is significant because it establishes the importance of this topic in Sante's mind, and it establishes a relatability to the author that wasnt established before. Most would agree that romance is significant to human life. Sante goes on to discuss a scenario involving passion and a dentist, which is somewhat of a random circumstance. Nonetheless, it gives the reader an idea of what Sante associates with romance, once again establishing that personal connection with the author. Sante also concedes that perhaps romantic secrets could fall in with personal secrets.
 
Achievements/ Effects - Sante creates a connection between the reader and a certain (very real and plausible) personal experience that we might all face. Sante succeeds in showing the effect of romantic secrets, even if they are harmless, and showcases what happens when they do get out of hand.He succeeds in creating a rather realistic scenario, in which you are presented with the thought process of what you would do, hiding a secret from your partner, or hiding your partner’s secret from other people, in fear of embarrassment. He states, “... and then you will find yourself sending discrete sums of money to people you haven’t thought of in years.”(Sante 182) In which he is successful at showing the consequences of hiding these romantic secrets. There is even a silent dig at the end where Sante states, “ Couples often tacitly erect a whole edifice of secrets, based on real or imagined causes for jealousy.” (Sante 182) Which is only to mean that secrets always come out, one way or the other. One can only help but to feel guilt about their own secrets and lies. 
 
Tone - Overall, Sante’s tone is accusatory and abrasive. Tone is often subjective to the one who is reading it, but there is a recurring theme with the use of certain words that can only be thought of as such. Sante uses words that relate to romance and love like “erotic sensation”, “partner”, “passion” , and uses them in the same sentence with the words “secrets” and  “jealousy”. The feeling of the passage is no longer a light-hearted one, it is one of shame and indignity. We can relate those feelings to that of hiding a secret from your partner, and even not hiding something, but someone.

This can correlate to him personally because it seems  it could be an example or a personal experience of his. Achievements/affects: Sante lists secrets in his writing to connect with the audience. By being relatable this allows his readers to trust what he has to say. This is a good connecting point Sante does to connect with his audience. 



Tone: Santeś tone is intimate throughout the section of ¨Personal Secrets''. When he talks about personal secrets he writes in a personalized manner for the reader due to the fact that it is an individualized topic.

Achievements: The author, Sante's achievement in writing this section is to show readers that everyone has personal secrets no matter how subtle it could be or how serious it could be. He makes a personal connection with his readers by probably exposing his own secrets or a secret's he's seen or heard of. 

Tone: Sante's tone in "Personal Secrets," is contemplative and earnest. Throughout his writing he seems as if he is studying the personal secrets of one, for example,"In other words, those secrets are chiefly of interest to the persons who carry them around,"(Stane Paragraph 1 Page 182). Here I feel that he is wondering of the secrets people carry with them. As for earnest Sante states,"You pick your nose when no one's looking;"(State Paragraph 1 Page 182). Sante creates a picture in the mind with his words, this is the use of illustrative method. 

Achievements: Sante informs about how mystical secrets affect a person. Which allows for people to be aware of the consequences that come with mystical secrets. Such consequences are, not finding any secrets or searching for secrets that very well might not exist. Sante achieves information given to the public as a warning to not seek out mystical secrets. 

Tone: Sante's tone is extremely informative. He remains informative throughout paragraph nine.
