Chapter 1. Cadence explains that she comes from a family of “old-money Democrats.” Outwardly the Sinclairs are the picture of white, upper-class success, but privately some of them struggle with debt and addiction.

Lockhart uses a gloomy tone throughout the book. Her tone stresses the fact that Cady is unhappy with her life and that's she's struggled and delt with a lot of pain. Lockhart also uses vivid imagery, thoroughly describing the houses and island.
