Polish and naturalized-French physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person and the only woman to win the Nobel Prize twice, and the only person to win the Nobel Prize in two scientific fields. Her husband, Pierre Curie, was a co-winner on her first Nobel Prize, making them the first ever married couple to win the Nobel Prize and launching the Curie family legacy of five Nobel Prizes. Why is DDT bad for the environment?
"DDT's devastating effect on the aquatic environment has been thoroughly studied.  Due to it's low solubility, it has a greater rate of bioaccumulation in water, and thus poses a great long-term threat to aquatic wildlife.  It's highly toxic to both aquatic invertebrate species, like stoneflies and crayfish, as well as fish.  Being able to affect all kinds of wildlife, and given it's low decay rate, it proliferates through the entire web of life until it reaches the species inhabiting the throne of the great chain of life, Homo Sapiens."

    Born in  1839, Josephine Cochran was a housewife who in her free time behind her house invented the first dishwasher to help with the never ending dishes. At the time her invention was a wooden box with scrubbers and and a manual wheel to turn water in. 
    Josephine Cochrane believed that if you want something done right you better do it yourself. 
    Her legacy and quote is still used to this day.

    Being handpicked to be one of three black students to integrate West Virginia’s graduate schools is something that many people would consider one of their life’s most notable moments, but it’s just one of several breakthroughs that have marked Katherine Johnson’s long and remarkable life. Born in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, in 1918, her intense curiosity and brilliance with numbers vaulted her ahead several grades in school. By 13, she was attending the high school on the campus of historically black West Virginia State College. At 18, she enrolled in the college itself, where she made quick work of the school’s math curriculum and found a mentor in math professor W. W. Schieffelin Claytor, the third African American to earn a PhD in mathematics. She graduated with highest honors in 1937 and took a job teaching at a black public school in Virginia.
