The word crime also comes with the word hate. Hate is a word that involves the rejection of something or some one that you want nothing to do with. The term hate crime was introduced in the 1980's, talking about the Jews and immigrants in Europe. Laws were created against hate crimes because the group of people believe that the special category is not needed as further protection. In 2000, New York legislature found out, “Hate can and do intimidate and disrupt entire communities.. Therefore our laws must be strengthened to provide clear recognition of the gravity of hate crime..” ()

Wisconsin vs Mitchell was held in 1993 by the U.S Supreme Court, this was a case where a white youth was beaten up by a group of African Americans and it involved his race. Todd Mitchell was a 19 year old and who was also the one who went to court. He was also sentenced 4 years rather than 2 years. This is where the supreme court established the constitutionality of hate crime laws.

Hate Crimes Gain Attention

One of the crimes that gained more attention was in Jasper, Texas. This was where someone by the name of James Byrd Jr. who was an African American that dragged to death by 3 white men behind a pickup truck. The thing is, James knew one of the 3 men, so of course he would accept a ride with them. There wasn’t really a motive why they killed him but just by the color of his skin. Another crime that gained attention was the death of Matthew Shepard, who was a gay man. He was killed by two other men who pretended to be gay as well; they also offered him a ride since they were being friendly at first. Then things changed around to where they began to beat him, torture him, tie him to a fence, and let him in the wilderness to die.

Roots of hate crime

The roots of hate crimes isn’t really an easy topic. I say that because they’re isn’t a specific answer on why some people have so much hatred towards an individual. People loathe others because of their skin color, religion, ethnicity, gender or their sexual orientation. There are many theories that can help you understand the rationale behind their hatred a bit more. Social instability is where a group of people are scared that their tradition or religious belief are dying due to the change of their society. Economic instability is where violence or prejudice against groups of immigrants results. Also, it is where they are blamed for taking jobs that are low and also keeping wages down. Mexican immigrants are currently the target of choice at the moment. New or illegal immigrants often lack language skills, also live in substandard housing, and work low-wage service jobs. Many Americans are not willing to take these low wage jobs, such as janitors or cooks.

Hate Crimes Around the World

Hate crimes around the word is very commonly know. Nations older than the U.S have histories of racial, religious conflict, or national. Which it may stretch back for centuries, making it more common. In February 2008, 17 people were killed, and more than 50 others were injured in Russia due to hate crimes attacks. Also Sova’s annual report says that 2007,670 people were killed and more than 550 people were injured across Russia due to hate-based attacks. Europe has many immigrants from Asian and African countries. Muslims are more pressured due to the terrorist attack on September 11th, 2001 in the U.S and also in Spain and Britain. There was an eleven year old Roma boy in Italy who was shot by a BB gun by a man who was determined to “shoot a Roma”. He was charged with an assault but not a hate crime. Darfur is a region made up of three states on the western edge of Sudan. Ever since 2003, there has been extreme conflict between some Arab tribal allies, government of Sudan, and rebels based on Darfur. 200,000 to 400,000 have been killed since the conflict began.
