Flash files load more quickly than Shockwave files.

Shockwave is more versatile. You can create more complex games, more elaborate interactivity and more detailed animation.

You can use more types of files with Shockwave. You could, for example, import a Flash file into a Shockwave movie, but it doesn't work the other way around.

Flash is more universal. More than 90 percent of Web users have the Flash plug-in installed, while a little less than 60 percent have the Shockwave plug-in.

Flash creation software is cheaper. Director costs a little less than $1,000, while Flash costs about $400.

Flash is an open-source format. Anybody can see how it works and is free to adapt it for their own purposes. Director uses a compiled file format, so it is extremely difficult to modify the program.

Flash is well-suited for developing user interfaces for Internet-based applications or online storefronts, along with other advertising or interface materials. Their files are much simpler and have the advantage of shorter loading times than Shockwave files.

Shockwave is intended for complex applications, such as interactive games, marketing or advertising simulations, and multi-user environments or applications and is more extensible than Flash.

Flash helps to give a website a more interactive and expressive. Also Flash is designed to be compatible with many different browsers. Adobe Flash player can be used to replace text elements on HTML Web pages with Flash equivalents , It supports the audio , the animation , and the advanced video handling and interactivity , It is vector-based but allows incorporation of bitmaps where needed. As Flash is vector based it is a lightweight option for animation with smaller file size. There are lots of tutorials available for Flash as it is the industry standard for low end animation.

Websites that use Flash have always been slower than the sites that do not, also in order to watch flash movies, Flash Player needs to be installed. Most mobiles can't read Flash and won't display Flash websites. Search engines may not be able to read some of the text on Flash websites also there can be issues with security vulnerabilities.
