In 1969, the first generation Toyota Coaster known as the U10 was introduced as a 17, 22 or 26 seat minibus with a 2.0L or 2.5L 2J engine.

1972

In 1972, the 2J engine was replaced with a 2997cc (3.0L) diesel B engine which was only available with a 5 speed manual shifter with column shift. The updated models were known as the RU19 and the BU19.

1977

In 1977, the Toyota Coaster's model platform code was changed to the B series and then it was known as the B10, although the vehicle itself was mostly unchanged. The RB10 had the same 5R petrol engine as the older U series models but the RB11, a 2189cc (2.2L) 20R petrol engine was introduced. The B diesel engine was discontinued and the 2B diesel engine which is 3168cc (3.2L) was introduced in the Toyota Coaster B10. In addition, 21 seat, 25 seat and high roof models were added.

In 1979, the column shift option was discontinued and then all gearboxes were henceforth floor shifted. The front grill recied a small change and the 5R petrol engine was no longer available.

1982

In 1982, the Toyota Coaster received a major body update and it was known as the B20/B30. The 2B diesel engine was replaced with the 3B diesel engine which is 3431cc (3.4L) in the BB20. However, the 22R engine continued in the RB20 model of the Toyota Coaster. The amount of seats you were able to choose were 16, 17, 20, 21, 22, and 26 seats.

1992

In 1992, the body was more aerodynamic and the 3rd gen Toyota Coaster was known as the B40/B50. The 3rd gen Coaster introduced emergency exit and barn door versions with th barn door version being optimized for people in wheelchairs and having a bigger emergency exit in some versions. Toyota also introduced new engines, the 4.2L 1HD-T turbocharged diesel, the 4.2L 1HZ diesel, and the 3.4L 3B diesel.

2010s, and 2015 in Kuwait

In the 2010s and 2015 in Kuwait, the Toyota Coaster received a seat design update for the passengers where the top edges had a flat design instead of a curved design. In addition, in 2015 in Kuwait, the 29/30 seat Toyota Coasters added a 3-point seat belt for the passenger seat that is right next to the driver.

2017

In 2017, the Toyota Coaster got a major redesign change and it has the same engine options. It was known as the 4th gen Toyota Coaster or the B60/B70/B80. It had options where the passenger seats could have 2-point seat belts or the safer 3-point seat belts. The height was increased by 60mm (2.4in), the width was increased by 40mm (1.6in), the window height was increased by 50mm (2.0in) and the door steps were lengthened by 65mm (2.6in) for easier entry and exit. However, in Kuwait, the 3-point seat belts for all of the passenger seats was not available until like 2021. The emergency exit version (not the barn doors, but the version with one door that is not a tailgate) was discontinued and delisted. And so the Toyota Coaster only has a tailgate version and a barn door version.

In 2021, Toyota Coaster buses in Kuwait got the option for 3-point seat belts for all of the passenger seats. And because of that, people riding a 2021 or later Toyota Coaster can use the 3-point seat belts and have a safe and enjoyable ride and lower the chances of passenger injuries.
