I thought this was interesting because John Lewis acknowledges the pause in protesting in the time between the original civil rights movement with Dr. King and the current era. Between now and then, the protesting of inequality for black people in America seemed to pause.

"Fear constrained us like an imaginary prison, and troubling thoughts of potential brutality committed for no understandable reason were the bars."

This quote stood out to me because it gave me a clear vision of what it is like for people facing this. The idea that their life is full of fear and that the fear that they feel is like a prison is sickening and so utterly disheartening. Fear should push you do learn and to grow not to feel constrained and confused. The metaphor / connection to the jail helped me realize on a deeper level just how they felt and how it affects them directly.

"The vote is the most powerful nonviolent change agent you have in a democratic society. You must use it because it is not guaranteed. You can lose it."

This quote stood out to me because I think that many people think that voting is a guarantee every 4 years, but then people come into power who can change those rules, and I believe that as long as everyone still had their own voice, we can prevent losing our right to vote.
