I know this because when the doctor shows up and says that Coyotito is still ill and needs help Kino has no choice, but to trust him, because he doesn’t possess the knowledge to be able to tell if he’s lying or not. “…He could not take the chance of pitting his certain ignorance against this man’s possible knowledge.” However in having to trust him he also essentially allowed the doctor to give what the reader can infer is most likely a poison that made Coyotito sick. “The spasm of the stomach muscles began, and the baby was very sick.” Therefore a theme in The Pearl is Ignorance can be dangerous.

For example, when the baby got stung by the scorpion, Kino went to the doctor. The doctor said that he was not a veterinarian, basically saying that there are animals and he doesn’t want to treat themaslp because they are poor and they have no money. But once the doctor found out that he found the pearl said, “He is a client of mine,” Pg. 22 The doctor also thought about going to Paris, “I am treating his child for scorpion sting,” and the doctor’s eyes rolled up a little in their fat hammocks and he thought of Paris.” Pg. 22 This shows that the doctor is taking advantage of Kino’s fortune by switching up on him because he now has money.
