My interpretation of how The Prisoner Who Wore Glasses relates to The Bonds Between Us

The short story, "The Prisoner Who Wore Glasses," relates to the essential question of "What are the special bonds that link us to family, friends, pets and communities" by Brille working with the rest of the prisoners in Span One. It shows this when the story says, "Thus, Span One had got out of control. They were the best thieves and liars in the camp. They lived all day on raw cabbages. They chatted and smoked tobacco. And since they moved, thought, and acted as one, they had perfected every technique of group concealment."(Head, 39-42) This explains their bond because they all work together like a family in order to get the resources they need. As prisoners, they have unequal rights compared to other people. As Span One, they come together to get what they need. In the story, Brille even singles himself out for dropping a cabbage to ensure the safety for the rest of Span One. The bonds between Brille and the rest of Span One are important, so they treat each other as how they would like to be treated.

This is one of my closest friends, Victoria Athey. I chose this picture as a visual for "The Bonds Between Us" because she has been a friend that shares a close bond with me since seventh grade. I know that I can always turn to Vickie when I need someone to talk to because she will always be able to lift my spirits. I can trust her will everything, and I know that she will always have my back.

This is my dog, Bowser. I chose him as a visual for "The Bonds Between Us" because even though he is just a dog, we share our own special bond. He is able to tell when I'm sad or in a bad mood, and somehow, he always finds a way to cheer me up. There was one time when I was feeling down, so instead of running out of his cage, he jumped up on me and licked my cheek. He is able to connect with me in a special way that no one else can.

My three poems are about the bonds between friends, my sisters, and my dog. The poem about my friends is an acrostic poem explaining what I see in them such as how they are like family and how they are always there for me. The poem about my sisters is a shape poem explaining how we connect. It explains how my sisters can be a pain to me, but I can still have them to trust. The poem about my dog is a haiku poem explaining how my dog can connect to me in a special way. He is different from others because he can cheer me up in a way no one else can.

My interpretation of how Animals in Translation relates to the Bonds Between Us

The short story, "Animals in Translation," relates to the essential question of "What are the special bonds that link us to family, friends, pets and communities" by animals being able to have special abilities that let them know things humans aren't capable of. It shows this when the story says, "Compared to humans, animals have astonishing abilities to perceive things in the world. They have extreme perception. Their sensory worlds are so much richer than ours it's almost as if we're deaf or blind."(Grandin and Johnson, 1-4) This is saying that since animal's senses are so much better than ours, it makes humans seems like we don't have senses at all, and that is a way they are able to connect to us. The story also says, "Jane's husband works at home, and five minutes before Jan comes home he'll see the cat go to the door, sit down, and wait."(Grandin and Johnson, 11-12) This is explaining bonds because the cat goes to the door and waits for her owner everyday. They share a bond because of the cat knowing when her owner is getting home, and because the cat wants to be there when her owner opens the door. I have my own personal experience with this because my dog has a big cage outside that connects to our shed. Everyday when the bus brings us home from school, he is always sitting outside in the corner of his cage waiting for us. Animals have special bonds that let them specially connect like no one else.

My interpretation of how Monkey See, Monkey Do, Monkey Connect relates to the Bonds Between Us

The short story, "Monkey See, Monkey Do, Monkey Connect," relates to the essential question of "What are the special bonds that link us to family, friends, pets and communities" by explaining how easily laughter, yawning, and traits from other people or things are somewhat contagious or taken in. An example of this is when the story says, "It began much more simply, with the synchronization of bodies: running when others run, laughing when others laugh, crying when others cry, or yawning when others yawn."(Waal, 30-32) This shows bonds because when others do something, we are likely going to want to do the same thing. Another example is when it says, "The way our bodies - including voice, mood, posture, and so on - are influenced by surrounding bodies is one of the mysteries of human existence, but one that provides the glue that holds entire societies together."(Waal, 172-175) This is saying that instead of weighing our own options on what we want to do, we do the things that other people do which is what keeps us connected. By doing what other people do, it is showing proof of bonds.
