If you can hear me...
When my pupils are talking to loud, or they are doing group work or they are to excited and I want them to calm down, I sometimes use an activity that works. I say aloud “If you hear me... touch your nose” and those students who hear me, they touch their nose. Then I repeat with another action, like “if you hear me close your eyes!” One by one realise something is going on and, at the end, they all can hear me. As the activity goes on and works, I low the volume of my voice.

Hi everyone,
it depends on the age cause the methods must be different in the same way they have a different age. With little children I use to turn off the lights if they are noisy or I play a song and I start singing. It's funny to say: 'if you listen to me, touch your..' and I say different body parts. It also works with first cycle, not older or they think you are a clown..jjjeee.
With Primary graders (first/second cycle) I start drawing or writing on the board or Interactive whiteboard, but I stay quiet in front of it. Another useful resource is speaking very low so that they pay attention..it works very well. I also use to start saying: 'Congratulations..' and the name of the student. On the other hand, with superior cycle, sometimes when I come into the class and they change the subject, I go out of class saying that when I come in, I want silence to start. I also stare in front of my table watching them seriously in silence, then they start saying: ssshhhh...

I use different techniques, depending on their age.
With the yougest I say "One, two, three (counting with my fingers), silence, please" (putting one finger in front of my lips and saying "shhh"). I do it several times, everytime lower.
My second cycle class is very talkative and there are some students who usualy disturb the class, so they tend to create a good enviroment working for it all together. So, when I need them to listen to me I rise my hands and start counting with my fingers in silence, only saying the numers 10, 20, 30... They imitate me and they usually want to create silence as soon as possible.
With the oldest, I just rise my hand and wait in silence. They do the same to show they also want silence and they're ready to listen.
