For as long as I can remember and based off of what my parents would tell me, I was never one who loved to read. I always wanted to be outside or doing something hands on. Really the only time I enjoyed reading was when my parents would read to me and even then, it was a book with colorful pictures and I was there more for the quality time rather than reading.

I believe in third grade is when our school started the A.R. program. I understand the purpose was to monitor how well we are comprehending the reading. I just absolutely hated that we had to read each week and take a test. However, I did like that we were allowed to choose books of our liking. When it came to writing, one thing I will never forget is how our teachers would let us start the day. From second grade to fifth grade we would start the day by taking out our comprehension writing book and for 5 minutes we were allowed to write about absolutely anything. It could be make believe or something real that we just wanted to talk about. I think it really allowed us to enjoy writing.

I think in middle school is when I started to appreciate reading a little more. I still was not one who liked to read on my own time, but ended up loving the books we read as a class. My favorite book to this day is The Outsiders. As I read the book I felt like I visualized every scene. After we finished reading the book, we watched the movie and I remember being proud of myself for visualizing most of it and even thinking that the movie just doesn't cover all the details that the book did.

In middle school is when I got a little more creative with my writing as well. We learned the different types of writing and how to write to a specific audience. My favorite type of writing is persuasive writing.

In high school, I think is when things began to become a little more complex. We started to use our reading and writing skills and learned how we could use them in the real world. We wrote research paper, argumentative papers, cover letters, and letters to potential future colleges. Although things were more arduous, it was nice to finally put everything we have learned over the years and use it in our own lives.

Also, another thing that I never really thought of until this reflection is how I believe it was my high school years when things started to go online. Writing essays were no longer on paper. They were on computers. We had to learn not only a more complex writing but the computer as well.

In college I think I wrote more papers and read more articles than I ever had to in my entire life! At the same, I learned so much! I think what I enjoyed the most was that most topics were either related to our major or to our society. Some of my favorite readings were about the different cultures that surrounded us. It helped me not only to understand another culture but how to be more open minded.
