Declared by President Lincoln during the Civil War, the proclaimation stated that enslaved African Americans were to be freed. This made the South angry because they were counting on slavery to keep them at a level somewhat close to the North in terms of economy. With this proclaimation in place, the enslaved peoples were slowly released from enslavement and set free and allowed to participate in American affairs, such as voting, as they were now citizens. This deeply changed the social structure as they were no longer slaves, but they were still seen as the "lower rung" of the social ladder.

The Civil War was the war between the North (The Unionists) and the South (the confederates). It began when the South started succeeding in large numbers after South Carolina did so first. It lasted from 1861-1865 and is one of the most deadly wars to be fought by Americans. The goal of the South was to keep slavery because they relied on it to keep their economny boosting and be able to somewhat keep up with the North's industrial boom. However, in the end, the South ended up losing and had to come join the Union again.

With the end of slavery came the Reconstruction Era, in which the Repubicans tried to build America back up again and give the newly freed African Americans protections. However, there was a court case that looked closely at the 14th Amendment (which outlawed segregation and harm towards African Americans) that put to light that the federal government couldn't intervine unless the state itself was segregating. So groups like the KKK emerged, which terroritzed and murdered African Americans because they thought they were superior to them.
