Quote #1: “They usually call me unique, which, depending on how you say it, could mean that I’m interesting or special or something. Like I stand out in a good way. But with me it never does. The truth is, everyone who calls me unique thinks I’m a complete weirdo. Especially adults.”

This quote was stated by the main character in the book, Lori. The quote was also from the exposition of the story. Because is was one of the very first things that Lori stated, this conveys to the reader that the quote is important to Lori’s character and actions throughout the novel. The book is set up to be like Lori’s diary in which she writes about how she feels about normal things on a daily basis; this is important to the story because the reader can truly understand Lori’s point of view on things that could help develop her character throughout the whole novel.

Quote #2: “Today's my half birthday. It's the first day of summer, and I'm exactly eleven and a half. I usually make a wish on my half birthdays, so I was thinking that I'd wish to be the thinnest girl at school, or maybe even the thinnest elven-year-old on the entire planet... I was just about to make the wish, but I sort of wondered what I'll have left to wish for on my real birthday, if I finally get that thin. I mean, what are girls supposed to wish for, other than being thin?”

I chose this quote because it really shows society’s impact on Lori’s way of thinking. She was only 13 and has grown up in a society that believes that the only good thing about a person is being thin. The way that she worded this quote also supports the fact that everyone is just so obsessed with being thin, that it is the only thing that would make sense to wish for on her birthday. Other 13 year old girls would ask for clothes or makeup, but asking to be thin really shows how someone with anorexia thinks.

Quote #3: "I told Mom that I wasn't planning on wearing makeup, even when I'm older, but then she asked, 'How can you walk out of the house without a little lip gloss on?' Like if a lady walked outside without any lip gloss, a huge lightning bolt would suddenly crash down from the sky and kill her. 'You just open the door and walk outside, ' I answered."

This quote was very impactful because it really shows how different Lori and her mother are, and the effect that her mother has on her way of thinking. This has such a big impact because even though this quote is just about makeup, the behavior of her mother led to her mindset of anorexia later on in the novel.

Quote #4: "When we finally got to the checkout line, I saw one of those collection boxes that said, PLEASE HELP THE HUNGRY...But the secret on the girl's lips was pretty obvious: 'People think I need help because I'm hungry, but they're the ones who need help. At least I'm thin.' "

This quote really emphasizes how the disorder is making Lori think. Almost everything that she sees, she associates with being thin. She believes everything is better if you are thin. She could look at any bad situation, and somehow make it good by being thin. This quote also emphasizes how she is distracted by the disorder. Instead of looking at the hungry girl and feeling bad, she looks at her with jealousy because she is thin.

Quote #5: "Dr. Gold got out some paper and a pencil and asked me to draw pictures of my friends and me...I took the pencil and drew Leslie, Lana, Tracy, and me. Except I'm the one with the thunder thighs in the picture...he asked me to draw my "ideal" of what I want to look like. I picked up the pencil and drew a girl I want to look like. When Dr. Gold took the drawing back, he didn't nod. 'This is a stick figure,' he said, like I didn't understand the assignment the first time...I tried explaining how that was exactly the way I want to look."

This quote is really important because at this point in time, Lori was eleven years and weighed about sixty pounds. Weighing sixty pounds and still thinking that you're overweight at that age is abnormal. Lori thought she was different because she wasn't as skinny as everyone else. This quote illustrates how a person suffering from anorexia sees herself and what they want to see.
