A&P - In this sculpture worth £750, Banksy created a brick clutch bag with absolutely no ‘worth’ as a bag. He suggested the bag could be “perfect for the kind of people who don’t carry much but might need to whack someone in the face.” The description further clarifies the aim of the sculpture: mocking individuals who blindly purchase designer bags, not for their convenience but to feel superiority over those who don’t have the financial ability to flaunt one.

C&T - The combination of a chipped, rough, and unusable brick with fine leather/golden details makes a huge contrast. The significance of this uncanny contrast would be the worthlessness of priceless bags that serves the same purpose of a standard bag. In a way, Banksy is hypocritical, yet smart, as he’s created a bag that serves no purpose and uses his name to have an absurd price tag.

Art was produced by Banksy in 2019

The piece was produced to showcase the knife crime issue in the UK and how violence is part of the UK.

This piece was aimed at politicians and the police. The piece is criticizing the police and the parliament on their handling of the London knife crime epidemic and mismanagement of refugee/ low-income immigrant communities.

The pop up store is in Croydon which is one of the most crime ridden areas of london.

It was worn my Stormzy who is rapper who was born in Croydon and was part of the local gangs

The context of the pop up influences my interpretation. It showcases the widespread nature of the crimes and highlights Croydon as the most affected. Also shows the disparity in London as it is the richest city in the UK but in contrast some areas are the most violent in England.

This text is an object from Banksy’s website selling items from his new store GrossDomesticProduct™.

The text was likely not written by Banksy himself but someone who works under him. The reason the text was produced (or the shop as a whole) is due to the fact that Banksy’s name was under legal fire and threatened to be taken away by another company claiming it to be theirs. Hence Banksy created this store to help sell more products under his name, more merchandise, to prevent this from happening (make a more industrial name for himself).

The intended audience is likely the general public as it is a store and so the goods being sold are marketed to anyone who is interested in buying those goods.

The store was opened on 3rd October, 2019

The store is in Croydon, London.

The context of the specific object I have chosen, the Met Ball, is that it is an old police riot helmet (meaning there is likely ties to police brutality or violence of some kind) with approximately 650 little mirrors attached to the round part of the helmet, which is then tied to a chain, imitating the look of a disco ball.

The author's message here is likely to emphasize the juxtaposition between having a party, which is a fun occasion that is enjoyed, to the violence that police have brought to the world and the way they harm people. It is almost like placing the police helmet on a pedestal, celebrating the police when in fact they have harmed society in many ways. Almost like painting a crime scene golden, it can’t cover up the horrifying nature of the scene, instead just adding to the disgust and doing a terrible job at masking the scene.

There are no real references in the text.

The significance is that it creates a statement on the relationship between authority and the general public.

The tone set is absurd, the author is creating a tone of unease and somewhat anger as such a symbol of oppression is being treated as a relic and something that is enjoyed.

The author sounds smug, with a nuanced tone, almost presenting this object just to see how the audience reacts as there is very limited background information, Banksy being an anonymous character with no idea of what their motives, beliefs, values, etc are.

The use of diction is very direct and unbiased. It is stated very matter of factly that the object is what it is. The object itself is what the author is presenting as the message, similar to the way bill watterson presents his comics, no real intention, open for people to interpret.

The mood is similar to the tone, unsettling, almost feels as though it is wrong. These two things clash and should not be tied together in any way.

The tone and mood help emphasize the relationship between the common people and those with power through the unease and irony that is created by placing the helmet in the spotlight.

The author uses irony and contrasting ideas/juxtaposition. This is seen through their use of combining the two ideas of a disco ball and a police helmet, as it is an absurd thing to compare and is such a sensitive topic that combining it with a disco ball, something that is representative of freedom and fun, with something that is repressive. The author uses the mirrors to create the refraction of light and a blinding effect, which adds to the impact this object has as it creates a powerful tone through that refraction of light.

When looking at the text provided with the object, it is structured as an explanation or report form of text. This is because it is explaining what the object is and reporting (systematically) what it contains. It therefore follows the convention those text types have of using formal language and being systematic (to the point) with the text. Diction is usually very concise. The text does not deviate much at all. The structure and layout provides a unbiased outlook on the Met Ball and so the audience can decide how they feel about the helmet itself, creating ambiguity and as an artist allowing for more conversation/discussion to occur about the object.
