How long have you been a principal? How long did you teach prior to becoming an administrator?

I have taught grades K-5 over the course of the last 5 years in different settings, such as the Regular Education setting to now being in the Special Education School setting.

What made you choose the teaching profession originally?

For me it would be having a couple really good teachers. They seemed to make learning fun and seemed to really care about what they did and their students. I wanted to become a teacher because I wanted to make that lasting impact and one that students go home from and love their classroom and just being at school. If a child starts out loving school I would hope that would carry on throughout the rest of their education.

What advice can you give me to better prepare me for the teaching profession?

I'm sure as you are aware, but being organized. Being organized is the best thing that you can do for your class and for yourself. Teaching is 10 times harder if one isn't prepared for the day and doesn't know where things are. This is a modeled skill too. If you are messy this is going to carry on to others.

What are some of the challenges I will face as a new teacher? What are the rewards in teaching? Could you provide me with specific examples from your own teaching experience or from some of the teachers you supervise?

As a new teacher there is a learning curve that one will have to experience. You're not going to be able to know everything when you start. Find those that are willing to help and ask questions. No question is ever a bad question. Most teachers can relate to their own experiences of struggling in their first year. No one is perfect. An example would not knowing how to access some of the technology in the classroom that you have been provided. What I would do is ask for assistance with this before the class starts or the previous day before using this technology to make things run smoothly. Down time can be the worst in some cases.

What does professionalism mean to you? What qualities do you seek in a new teacher? How can I "stand out" during the application, interview, and hiring process after I earn my teaching license?

Professionalism means that you strive to do your best at all times. You are respected and a means that is held in higher regard to others. I seek out those that are timely, well dressed, uses manners and a lot of times I look for those that wear a watch. I have noticed that those that wear a watch are timely and seemingly more dependable. Standing out can be a very useful tool when it comes to multiple applicants. Providing a resume with color always helps. There are tons of black and white resume and they are really dull. Don't slouch, seem sullen, and don't be scared to ask questions. Those with questions seem more interested in wanting the job. I love questions.

What changes, if any, would you make to the educational system? Consider various aspects of education reform, funding, state assessments, etc…

There would be a few that come to mind. The first one would be the funding. It seems that most educational tools that could be very useful in the classroom are out of reach for the public districts due to money. I would love to provide staff with everything to make their job easier, but things have to be requisitioned and a lot of times it's not feasible. State assessment would be another that is a struggle. I feel there needs to be another form of assessing students. Students are not interesting in the old fashion fill in the blank forms. A lot of times students rush to get done, thus not doing their best. We are more than capable to create a more informative engaging testing format.

If I could change another career field it would probably be a doctor. This only because I would be able to get paid more. I definitely wouldn't enjoy it as much as I enjoy my job now though. I don't know though if I would be able to make it through that many years of school though haha. I love what I do now.
