- Phonological knowledge is knowing the sound structure of words.
- Morphological knowledge is being aware of the meaning or understanding the smallest part of the words. Morphemes can be used to form words.
- Orthographic knowledge is stored within our brains that tell us how to represent spoken language in written form.
- Etymological knowledge is knowing the origin of the words. Many English words come from other languages.
- Visual knowledge helps us store words and the components of words in our memories. (Sight words)
- Semantic knowledge is knowing the meaning of words. Good spellers know the meaning of the words that they are spelling. 
*Good spelling is learned; it is not intangible gift that some have and others do not. 
* Most school test the ability to spell in stead of actually teaching the spelling strategies.
