This activity can be used to assess understanding of Main Idea

"The student will recall and identify the main idea of the story"

The student goes to the poster board and identifies the main idea out of the given three possibilities. The student then runs back to their group and retells the main idea. The next student writes the main idea exactly as the first runner stated it. Then the third student draws out the main idea based on the words. This is done in small groups before or after a lesson. If this is done before the lesson this would activate prior knowledge and allow them to make text to text connections. If this is done after reading multiple stories this helps the students recall prior information and main ideas of multiple stories.
