The use of nouns such as ‘charm’ imply that it is a lovely, attractive place, which is attempting to encourage more people to visit. The reporter in the source is working for a news station based in the area, and so would want to promote tourism in order to boost local businesses that thrive during the Goth Festival. It is made clear through the line ‘the fishnet stockings worn by the Goths brings in more cash than the fishing nets themselves’ that Whitby is somewhat reliant on the income of the Festival, making this even more significant. Whitby’s major income being from the fishing industry gives this line both humour and irony and the speaker creates a connection between the ‘fishing’ and the ‘fishnets’.

Whitby became a popular destination for Goths and the home to the Goth weekend after Bram Stoker was inspired to write his well-known Gothic novel, Dracula, brining attention to this small town in Yorkshire.
