The story Look Both Ways was written by Jason Reynolds. This book is made up of 10 different short stories; they are all very different but all show friendship in some way. These stories are all written in their middle school years. It is better to go through life with you best friend by you side; and with that you can do anything.

Theme Exploration

The theme that I have chosen to do is friendship; and how sometimes all you need is a good friend. In the short story "5 Things Easier to do Than Simeon's and Kenzi's Secret Handshake." Kenzi was always on the smaller side for his size, so Simeon was always there to defend and back-up Kenzi. On page 98 Jason Reynolds writes "When you Simeon's size a look is more than enough". As well as in the story "Water Booger Bears" Jasmine and Tj did different things to show they care for each other; like putting "friendship flags" in one another's locker. The author shows this on page 9 where it says "Tj would show up and leave some empty potato chip bags next to Jasmine's bed to add to the 30 he had left in her locker. Friendship flags."

Character Analysis

The first character that I will be talking about is from the story "The Low Cuts Strike Again". Which is Bit, Bit is a character that when you first glance at he is very small, and short. So he doesn't look like he would be very outgoing or willing to stand up for himself. But Bit is the complete opposite, he is the leader of their group and shows he is in charge. Bit is a great example of showing that it doesn't matter your size you can do anything. A quote that the author shows this is "But not Bit. Bit would knock heads, no question". (page 18) I think Bit acts so tough is so people won't be able to get through his tough shell. Because Bit struggles quite a lot, as his family struggles with money and his family struggles with cancer. It can be a lot so he just try's his best to hide it with his toughness.

Literary Devices & Structure

In the story when Jason Reynolds used symbolism it really helps the reader to get a clear picture in their head just what the characters are doing. This makes it easier for the reader to understand what is happening in these little detail in the story. The author showed a great example of symbolism in the story "Water Booger Bears" when Jasmine and TJ would leave little wrappers in each others lockers to show they cared for one another. A quote that shows this in the story is "Trash...yes. But Jasmine and Tj called them "friendship flags", the litter of love". This novel is structure in 10 different short stories that all show how friendship is very important especially in your middle school years. Having these short stories helps to show that these things are only relevant in one story but rather show you that these are things that we see in many different peoples lives.

I think this book can show us something in today's world; like that everything that happens to you can bring you closer to someone you care for. Something I can relate to this book from personal experience. Is that it is very important to have someone that understands you by your side more than anything. Overall it is really important to have a good friend by your side to go through things together.
